Start with customer need, break into its root causes & see where metrics or research do/don't support if this is an important priority.

If you are structured the potential features, priorities and iterations become significantly easier to come up with.

Much better vs. random idea generation.

NYC not a very affordable place to put a 600,000 square foot routing hub.

Hopefully it still gets to you in time for the match! COYG.

If your most effective management skill is insisting people work 80 hours a week, you might want to consider learning some new management skills.

At a first read of the GPT-5 models initial analyses, there are to me a few things that jump out:
1. Hybrid system that has a router for different models
2. โ Not a dramatic leap
3. โ Writing, code, health
4. Prices

Letโ€™s do a deeper diveโ€ฆ

It can replace some developers but that isnโ€™t usually the focus of a VP or director.

Which is a big part of the issue: AI canโ€™t tell you what customer problems to solve or how to do that in a differentiated way. You canโ€™t yet automate vision.

Just when many companies were learning to focus on outcomes over outputsโ€ฆ along comes AI.

German Word of the Day: Der Schmetterling Despite the notorious Youtube video, this word is particularly beautiful (and German sounding).

True, not compound in the same way as many German words.

I looked up the etymology which is nice: it is derived from the word "schmetten" which means cream, under the old belief that butterflies are witches stealing cream/butter. Hence... butterfly!

Drive from Chicago to Minneapolis with my 12 year old daughter. This means listening to the entire Taylor Swift discography from start to finish. Tim McGraw onwards.

Wonโ€™t quite finish round trip, but will cover a lot. I think this is the 6th time we will have done thisโ€ฆ

Latest example of needing to look beyond averages:
โ€ข 12 year old got permission from my wife to sleep over at a friend's house AND also separately from me
โ€ขย 16 year old is on an educational trip
โ€ข 18 year old just stayed out
โ€ข On average, each of my 3 kids have permission 1.0x

Perfect, right?

Not to mention, executives setting goals that teams have to be x% more productive via using AI. How will they verify?

When the 2025 DORA survey comes out, we'll have to take the self-reported numbers with a huge grain of salt.

"In the last 3 months, how has AI impacted your productivity at work?"

Though I will say what is superior about LUB is it makes explicit that learning is in service of insights and actions.

If feature evaluation as part of BML is performative and doesnโ€™t lead to a โ€œso whatโ€ then itโ€™s much less useful!

05.07.2025 20:06 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Both can be useful and either are better than naive belief in blind delivery. Using them in combination is ideal. There are nuances about when and how to use each.

Once teams experience great outcomes they will be less excited about outputs alone. Hopefully this will become more and more prevalent!

The biggest gap I see isnโ€™t teams putting โ€œlearnโ€ in the wrong order. Itโ€™s thinking they donโ€™t have time.

Learning should be ubiquitous: before, during & after. Learn by studying the customer & their problems. Learn by evaluating usage and results. Different types & costs.

Just keep learning.
