I think it’s really kind of astounding that for all the choices and branching and etc in Baldur’s Gate 3 the message and theming is consistent and coherent throughout. It presents its heart and says β€œDo with this what you will”. It’s dope.

I do wonder whether people know how influential the argument was during the middle of the twentieth century that education was becoming too feminized.

Anyway, yeah, it never was about β€œjobs.”

Ons thing that's really bugging me about the "PhD level intelligence" is that a PhD isn't a measure of intelligence, it's a measure of commitment to study and specialisation in a narrow field (and opportunity to do so).

"PhD level intelligence" isn't really a meaningful phrase

jc denton: tell me more about these "lifehacks".

deus ex npc: you can use a hairclip around long wires, like on headphones, to keep them from getting tangled.

jc: human ingenuity is powerful.

deus ex npc: use a pringles can to hold your pasta.

jc: powerful - and dangerous.

Photograph of some of the twenty thousand women from the march in the amphitheatre of the Union Buildings, seat of the apartheid government, in Pretoria (then in the Transvaal province; now in Gauteng; the city still serves as the capital of post-apartheid South Africa, and is now part of a larger local government administrative entity called Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality). The march had been organised by the Federation of South African Women (FEDSAW).

The women's gathering in the amphitheatre of the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956, with government offices visible behind the pillars, and white apartheid civil servants and officials looking on from the walkway behind the balustrades. The Union Buildings, constructed between 1911 and 1913, designed by British colonial architect Herbert Baker (who also designed State House in Nairobi, and several notable government buildings in New Delhi), became the seat of the unified white supremacist colonial government established in 1910 between the four colonialist white supremacist settlements (the Boer republics of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek and the Oranje Vrijstaat; and the British Cape and Natal colonies), in the city named after the first president of the white supremacist republic established by the descendants of Dutch settlers and other European colonists established in 1852. In 1948 it became the seat of the apartheid government, and in 1994 the seat of the post-apartheid democratic government. The amphitheatre is also the space in which Nelson Mandela took the oath of office to become the first president of a democratic Republic of South Africa.

The march was led into the amphitheatre of the Union Buildings by a smaller group of women who handed the petition of demands and objections to the white supremacist apartheid prime minister of what was still a British colony (South Africa only became a republic independent of Britain on 31 May 1961); some of this smaller group pictured here includes Lillian Ngoyi, Sophia Williams-de Bruyn, Rahima Moosa, and Helen Joseph. Other women involved in leadership and organisation included Ruth Mompati, Fatima Meer (one of Mandela's earliest biographers who was imprisoned with Winnie Mandela in the prison complex whicb became post-apartheid South Africa's apex court, the Constitutional Court in Johannesburg), Albertina Sisulu, Frances Baard, Annie Peters, Nosipho Dastile, Flotence Mkhize, and the trade unionist Rita Ndzanga.

On 9 August 1956, twenty thousand women marched to the Union Buildings, the seat of the apartheid government, to protest laws forcing Black women to carry identity documents ("passes").

#WomensDay in South Africa: "wathint' abafazi, wathint' imbokodo" ("you strike the women, you strike a rock").

As a former copy editor (and an eternal copy editor at heart), I can tell you that you would be *amazed* at the difference between what some writers file and what gets published. At least half of the love you feel for your favorite authors should go to the copy desk.

Writers should internalize Lao Tzu's lesson about how the emptiness at the center of a wheel is what makes it useful, and how a pot is valuable because of where the clay *isn't*. Corporate geek culture has warped us into thinking that negative spaces are flaws that need to be fixed.

Absolute worst part, imo, is the pressure from school administrators to "welcome our new overlords" by adopting AI. It's also happening in elite universities, to my utter bafflement & horror. Anyone who calls bullshit on AI is treated as if only ignorance could explain their perspective.

I think Altman assumes that β€œPhD-level expert” means someone who speaks confidently on everything as opposed to saying β€œit’s nuanced,” losing their keys, and getting maniacally fixated on their current topic to the point of seeing it in everything.

I feel like every single day I need to post a reminder: if you ask an LLM about itself it DOES NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT ITS INNER WORKINGS and WILL NOT TELL YOU ANYTHING ACTUALLY ABOUT ITSELF. It just (as it always does) will make up some plausible sounding answer.

We're not too far away from the Final Fantasy Games outnumbering the Kings Louis.

I guess we'll never have a King Louis X-2 though.

Warhammer is often about marines of space but what the people want is Fashion Skavens and they are skaven dolls and you dress them up in fancy outfits and you take them to visit your friends house and you drink coffee and you put your Fashion Skaven in your friend's Fashion Skaven house for a visit

Then again, I have had dogs that cost zero dollars that firmly believed they should be on dining tables. They were rather upset that I didn't agree.
