the only worse thing I've caught was bacterial pneumonia as a kid that would have hospitalized me but Cipro had just hit the market in a big way and barely allowed me to sleep it off at my mom's friend's house while she was at work. I don't remember jack shit about it though so it hardly counts

we tested my theory that if you start taking a prescription dose of Benadryl (WITH a doctor's approval, that's important) and an NSAID as soon as the rash starts, it'll maybe be less bad symptomatically, and it seemed to hold true for them at least? but fucks sake what an awful illness

at one point I was strongly considering just biting my fingers off to be done with it because they got that unbearable. I was living on Benadryl and the power of freezing bottled water so I could wrap my entire hands around it. shit was terrible and my partner caught it too

it was such a goddamn roller coaster of Medical Events, I probably wouldn't have caught HFM but I was in the ER with a combo panic attack and possible food poisoning and I almost definitely picked it up there

there are perfectly good platforms based entirely around user-generated content and social interaction, and that don't require gameplay whatsoever, and yet sometimes you get in a roulette with an incompetent naked catgirl who clearly doesn't want to be there either. there's options!

right? literally everyone can tell! it's not a secret when you're behaving in really blatantly weird and distracted ways in either context! at least modding doesn't get people killed IRL though so I guess that's one point in its favor.

anyway rip in fucking peace. I won't be sad if they actually do decide they have to kill mods entirely.

(there's more to be said about how covid lockdowns, closed IRL clubs, and the sudden shit in the bed that WoW took on top of FFXIV's star suddenly rising all combined to spawn a new RP community, who seemed to think they invented RP in FFXIV and had no attachments to the old one...)

make no mistake, the rise of easy visual modding and Mare specifically helped this new RP-lite scene to proliferate very quickly, with wildly different priorities and very little shared membership with what used to pass as RP. it literally pushed people out.

and I hate it for that.

RP as a means to turn a profit was absurd as a concept to the old RP scene. you built your places because you loved running them for people, not because you expected to charge fees for interaction. nobody would have even paid! they'd have been pissed at you for asking that!

making people pay gil for anything short of RP written to client spec was fucking unheard of for years, and then suddenly it became Normal to have cover charges and items for sale and real gil for RP food and VIP services and—you get me. that's all from the club scene side.

I don't recognize it. it's so overwhelmingly full of nightclubs and, well, stuff that would have really gone quite well in Second Life, to be fully honest, but that doesn't feel like it fits in FFXIV. even the 'serious RPer' scene has the undeniable fingerprints of the SL club scene all over it.

I don't like what the RP scene in FFXIV became because of mods becoming so widespread. I don't do it anymore. I'm not interested. some of that is trauma from being proverbially locked in a room with the biggest assholes you can imagine for years but a lot of it is just...it's changed so damn much.

like for all the people who don't really get into the gameplay in FFXIV, and just want to hang out and look pretty, I'm being so serious when I say that there are games that exist specifically to do that and you might be better served by trying them out.

but there is a really really big contingent of visual modders to whom, and I mean this genuinely, I would like to say:

have you considered Second Life? because that is custom made to do the specific things you want, and it's EXPECTED there. that is WHAT IT'S FOR. it exists for that reason.

"well I just want to make my character fat/disabled/look more like their non-white race" yeah that's fine. I can't stop you anyway so like, do your thing. besides, that's not what I'm talking about. representation modders are not usually the really annoying ones here doing this shit anyway.

like this shit does affect others. it really does. modders like to believe that their visual mods don't affect non-modders and they don't, as such, but it does actually change their behavior, in very unsubtle ways. they don't notice it but believe me, others do and it's off-putting.

I've seen people get literally bullied and shit for refusing to mod and that is so insanely weird. I've got friends on console who can't mod and they get left out of things and they get their time fucking wasted on raid nights due to "oh we can't queue yet I'm getting my mods right"
