Closing the communication gap: The new priority in public health In an op-ed published August 2 in the New England Journal of Medicine, four members of Yale's health ecosystem lay out a case for how to make America trust

“And my last piece of advice – if you are a clinician or scientist
interested in communicating with the public — is to just start, even if you’re still a student!”
- @kmpanthagani.bsky.social

We talked to Panthagani about how to close the communication gap in public health ⬇️

More than 1/2 of Americans who tried new health tactics in the past year said that social media posts were the source of those strategies.
Only 1/3 learned about them from their doctor.

People are turning to social media for health advice.

Meet them where they are. Create your own science channel on social media and see what works and what doesn't.

Don’t blast people for not trusting vaccines. That anger – when directed at someone who is already hesitant – can actually make the problem worse.

A much better approach is to have these conversations from a place of empathy and seek to genuinely understand people's concerns and values.

Empathy goes a long way.

Shame-based messaging is common in online discourse, but it is counterproductive to trust building.

An illustration of speed bumps. Each bump has one of the following words: ICD-10-CM, syndromic, genomics, p-value, causative. Text reads, Think of every word that people are unfamiliar with as a speed bump. Even if we define the word or acronym, each of those is a speed bump when people are listening to you. ⚠️ People might tolerate one or two, but if they run into too many, they're going to want to get off the road.

Talk like a normal person.

To get practice speaking without jargon, try explaining a scientific topic to a family member and get feedback on whether or not they understood anything that you said.

Share what you know and what you don’t know.

Communicating uncertainty transparently helps maintain trust, especially when guidance is evolving.

Talk with people, not at them.

Clinicians are currently trained to justify the importance of their research to other academics, not their neighbors.

Let’s talk about science, baby.
Let’s talk about empathy.
Let’s talk about all we do know.
And all we don’t know, that may be.
Let’s talk about science.

1- Clinicians, scientists & public health experts would benefit from more training in how to communicate with the public, the authors of this @nejm.org perspective argue.
