It provides a more dependable source of pollen for the butterflies, unlike the passiflora which blooms seasonally.

⬆️ - Learn to grow with and alongside others to get what one needs from multiple sources.

⬇️ - Over-reliance on a single source of nourishment leads to potential pain.

Sapho Longwings only lay their eggs upon this passiflora, and consume its leaves after hatching. They eat the pollen of the Psiguria, using their longer lives to develop traplines of the plants (known paths of pollination). This orange flowering vine continue to bloom for up to a full year.

This has significant benefits, as the protein in the pollen helps these butterflies to live far beyond most others - up to six or seven months!

In addition to this unique behavior, it has an important co-evolution with two different plants - Psiguria warscewiczii and Passiflora pittieri.

The Sapho Longwing butterfly (Heliconius sapho) is native to Central America. It is not a true nectar robber - instead it is one of the only species of butterfly known to eat the pollen of plants itself.
