I've experienced this myself and seen it happen in my students. Do you happen to have a journal article reference for this superego effect?

Here's another opinion to consider - 'With Carney at the helm, Canada is building railroads, deep water ports, infrastructure, and international alliances to own the top of the world'

If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty secondsβ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything thatβs in it,
Andβwhich is moreβyouβll be a Man, my son!

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: βHold on!β
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kingsβnor lose the common touch

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth youβve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build βem up with worn-out tools:

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, donβt deal in lies
Or being hated, donβt give way to hating,
And yet donβt look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dreamβand not make dreams your master;
If you can thinkβand not make thoughts your aim;

To my fellow π¨π¦ and πΊπΈ friends. Kipling's IF seems appropriate for the double plus ungood times:
"If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;

Alcohol is being taken off the shelves in Canada and sent back to American liquor companies.
Itβs consignment. They donβt pay for it until it has been sold.
The trust that took 2 world wars and generations to build is gone with one election. It will take generations of good deeds to rebuild.

I'm old enough to remember railing against then π¨π¦PM Mulroney's free trade agreement with the USA. Irish eyes were smiling at a 'sing along' with Reagan as Canada turned trade away from East-West and towards North-South. Always wary of the elephant.

If your experience as a student is passive, accepting whatever teachers give you, then, ya teaching is totally different.
If you're an active critical thinker then new things aren't a threat.
Why is it easier to get a student to write a poem than to convince a teacher bestie to use your time-saving techniques? Because weβre teachers, not learners!

Prussian factory-style schools caught on in the West as the spread of industrialization created a need for compliant, literate workers. Industrialists led the charge to adopt universal education in the US, UK, and elsewhere in Europe.
What is school for is the greatest question we need to answer.
Public education started in early 1800's Prussia in response to industrialization
1. Compliance - submission to authority and norms
2. Judgement - sorting kids into job/career (kids with inheritance go to private schools)
3. Day care - parents can work (some 2-4 part-time jobs) to make more for 1%
So... feel to be conscious, be conscious to be aware, be aware to observe, observe to discover, discover to question, question to think, think to have ideas, have ideas to get into a groove, and get into a groove to get stuck in a rut.
To get out of a rut find reverse.
Ruts begin as grooves
Grooves begin as ideas
Ideas begin as thoughts
Thoughts begin as questions
Questions begin as discoveries
Discoveries begin as observations
Observations begin as awareness
Awareness begins as consciousness
Consciousness begins as feeling
Ruts are visble from the outside
Grooves are visible once inside
Ruts shape
Grooves inform
Ruts begin as grooves
Grooves begin as ideas
Stuck in a rut
Go with a groove
A rut saps
A groove invigorates
Ruts are hazards
Grooves are welcome
Avoid ruts
Seek grooves
Ruts and Grooves
In a rut time drags
In a groove time flows
In a rut lies despair
In a groove lies hope
A rut controls
A groove liberates
A rut is a trap
A groove is a choice
A rut feels safe
A groove feels risky
Hey Jamie. Have you tried the autotracker function in Tracker from physlets.org/tracker ? It can be used online or downloaded.

Thanks for sharing. It's now on my reading list. Love the premise.

It's cheeky but captures what Canadians are about. We do the best we can with what we have in the moment and then live with the results. Sure, we may grumble about the outcome but most of us carry on and find our way one day at a time.
"As American as Apple Pie'"
A few years ago there was a CBC radio show called Morning Side. They asked listeners to complete the phrase "As Canadian as ..."
Heather Scott answered the challenge with "... possible under the circumstances."
Rethinking Public Education that prepares for life.
We affirm the primacy of responsive teaching and learning.
We are most interested in your thoughts on the attached belief statements.
If you value education that puts:
Curiosity over compliance
Equity over efficiency
Collaboration over competition
Learning over teaching

Collaboration over competition.
Make school more about sharing ideas, awareness, and development - understand that we are in this together and together we are stronger.
Make school less about winning and reducing the worth of a human being to their mark or GPA.
Fairness over efficiency.
Make school more about treasuring difference and being fair and equitable for all and
less about standardized 'tests' and assembly line processing students
Creativity over compliance.
Make school more about stoking the embers of enthusiastic creative beings bursting with possibilities and
less about breaking spirits into still, quiet, rule followers nursing grievance and resentment
