I think that while AI algorithms do their best to avoid bias, I don't think it is possible in application. I also think that most of the biases stem from what the user is asking it to generate. #J201 #317

Judge wonβt take further steps to enforce his order in AP case against Trump administration
A federal judge who ordered the Trump administration to stop blocking The Associated Press from presidential events has refused to take immediate steps to get White House officials to comply.
This week in #J201, we discussed First Amendment rights and how they pertain to media coverage. It reminded me of the ongoing legal battle between the Trump Administration and the AP. Do you think the First Amendment protects the AP's White House Press credentials? #317

I had the same thought during lecture today. If watching someone get corrected makes us less defensive, should that theoretically result in people accepting something that's "fact checked"? #J201 #317

Very interesting idea. I think most satirical news comes from accepted satire sources such as 'The Onion' I could see this becoming an issue in the future. #j201 #301

This week in #j201 we why people believe in conspiracy theories and the groups of people that tend to believe in them. My question is how we can go about prioritizing skills we learn through education such as critical thinking, without overdoing it and questioning everything? #317

I agree, I found this lecture extremely interesting. Though I am curious if these ads that appear on top of search results have the same effect as more traditional forms of advertising. #J201 #317

I found this reading very insightful and more self-aware of my own tendency to believe misinformation. I think having less education could factor into this correlation. #J201 #317

Jobs Report Is Steady, but Impact of Federal Cutbacks and Tariffs Looms
Employers added 151,000 jobs in February, the Labor Department said, based on surveys taken as Trump administration policies were still rolling out.
The jobs report from this month details the change in government jobs from this month compared to previous ones. These reports could impact the career decisions people make at a given time. An example of how mass communication can affect our choices. #J201 #317

I agree it is interesting that we see the world as more "dangerous" than ever when the reality is our world is safer in most aspects. Do you think that the type of news we are drawn to also contributes to this issue?

This article stood out to me today because it was not on the NYT home page despite being published today. Do you think our perception of news media stems from the fact that sites like NYT choose to highlight more alarming/negative coverage as opposed to positive coverage like this?

I think based on the examples shown in class, ads based on social issues work best when the company is willing to take a firm stance on the issue. The problem with the Pepsi ad was that they tried to highlight the issue without presenting a side on the issue. #J201 #317

I think our current media landscape has become more reliant on framing as a means to grab readers' attention and get clicks on stories. I worry that unbiased, fact-based reporting will become increasingly obsolete as consumers become more responsive to attention-grabbing headlines. #J201 #317

I find it interesting how the emergence of social media advertising has changed the way our products are marketed to us compared to previous generations. I wonder how sustainable this method of advertising will be for companies in the long term.

I agree! While I think it's important to cover bad events to keep people informed, I also think it causes individuals to have a more negative perception of the world. I think news should be more balanced between positive and negative coverage.

I agree, I really enjoyed seeing the different ways companies advertise. I liked that Prof Wagner included a variety of ways ads use emotions like the "Like a girl" ad, which was more inspirational to the more humorous Snickers ads.

Trump Renamed the Gulf of Mexico, but Who Controls It?
The United States, Mexico and Cuba have jurisdiction over different parts of the gulf.
NYT has started doing patrol coverage on the Gulf of Mexico. This became a salient topic after Trump announced plans to rename it to "The Gulf of America".
This exemplifies how the response to one event can change the news agenda. #J201 #317

I agree that this lecture material was interesting. I think this shift was a ripple effect of sorts after the LBJ ad Prof. Wagner showed in class today; I feel this ad was a huge success factor in getting him elected, and other politicians followed suit to recreate the same success. #UWJ201 #317

Bob Iger Explains Why Venu Was Scrapped, Why Disney Bought Fubo and Why New Skinny Bundles Help ESPN
Disney dropped Venu and opted to buy smaller sports rival Fubo as it found new potential to distribute ESPN to younger consumers via skinny bundles.
Disney just announced plans to redistribute ESPN into βskinnierβ bundle packages with Disney + and Hulu. This is a perfect example of how horizontal integration is affecting the way executives decide how their media content is distributed.
