I absolutely adore the film. It was one I kept sticking on my annual "things I'd like on Blu-ray" new year wishlist—til I gave up believing it was ever gonna happen. Then somehow missed a VS release. 😂

I read it as clever jab at those who actually did make a cult of Savile. Contemporary documentary deal with the silencing of victims and whistle-blowers. And an establishment in thrall. Boyle very much holding up a mirror to those who knew. Or I may just be overthinking a bit of very dark humour

These early shorts are more entertaining when the action is moved from the park bench. Here, the bench itself is moved to Venice beach—and despite not being atypical early Chaplin slapstick, an enhanced sense of time and place makes for a far more engaging experience. A really enjoyable one-reeler!

The BFI Essanay Collection

Been working through this collection of shorts this weekend. Thoughts as I approach the midway point: they all deserve a second look! Even with a static camera there is so much going on in-frame that it is hard to keep on top of all the fun little quirks and moments of improv from supporting cast.

The Tramp, Charlie Chaplin

In the The Tramp, 1915, I feel the pathos doesn't quite land as the necessary romance is lost in all the head bonking, pitchforking, and pratfalls. At his most sentimental Chaplin can have me in tears—but here the ending felt a little ad hoc.

Thought A Night Out was a tale of two halves—the drunken violence of the first reel was annoying. But, the conclusion—a bedroom swapping farce—was fun. The Champion I've enjoyed to from the outset. Not least cos it doesn't open with a steamin Charlie being a total knob to strangers. #NowWatching
