This is a direct result of Bluesky , and yes the people of influence to claim to want to listen , not taking years of discussion of how Blocklists were attack vectors , AND the level of frustration people have with the discussions

That are only new to you if you've not been in the crosshairs.

(and ignored everyone who told you about the various hatemongers who joined this site w/ histories of doing the same elsewhere).

There's always a chasm between "someone who wants to use your social media site" and "someone who wants to target people on your social media site" and the usual "people wouldn't do that" only works on the former, not the latter.

Social media spaces do not want to take up the effort and duty to constantly remove hate mongering groups, predators and scammers which are, all technically, against the TOS, but too much labor and risk in targeting when they actively stop them.

So shitheads ALWAYS turn online space to Nazi bars.

The flipside of the blocklist is the "starter set" issue. Every positive "starter set" of subscriptions is also a "target list" for the hatebros.

The lack of being able to make things private on Bluesky adds a lot to this risk space.

The issue would be less pronounced with proper moderation, but bluesky management has not really been about that and here we are.

It's the fact blocklists are easy ways to disrupt existing networks.

It requires a high level of trust/research on whose lists your subscribing to and that people are generally not educated on these tactics, which causes the problems.

So let's say there's a blocklist against homophobes and you subscribe. Everything's great for 2-3 months. Then, after the block list has a large enough number of subscribed followers, they start putting on LGBTQ influencers/politicians; unless you're paying VERY CLOSE attention, you don't notice.

The actual main issue with blocklists isn't "I don't get to hear from people in X category" the problem is that bad actors will make a "double agent blocklist" - first it seems like it's blocking the group it's supposed to, then they start adding names from the networks they want to break up.

Was about to query a press the other day then had to stop when it got to asking for social media numbers. Nothing will turn me away from an agent/press faster than that for a variety of reasons. And then requiring that as part of the query at that.
