But also I cannot imagine anything ever lingering for longer than a month, let alone stringing a client along for months

It's just terrible planning and inevitable disaster in the future. Sadly every commissioner I have worked with has at least a few horror stories like this...

Ugh these kind of people are so incredibly unprofessional. There's just no way you have to wait for the initial sketch (????) for months

It's why I personally always do the inital sketch before any kind of payment, then if client likes it, I take the whole payment. I risk, then they risk. Easier!

I once shopped at a street stall in France. At the time, I remember being excited by the appearance of the market, which looked like something out of a fantasy world. I hope to visit again someday.
