My latest #BookReview is for a skillful blend of Gothic horror, monster romance, and poignant and pertinent social commentary in this novella from @jacobstevenmohr.bsky.social. A fresh take on a mythological creature you don't often see explored sympathetically and impeccable dark fairy tale vibes!

There's some folks for whom losing a specific limb might be worse than killing them bc they can no longer find happiness in their passion, and while that's undoubtedly not universally true, pretending dismemberment is a mercy just says you didn't want to look for real solutions to mitigate harm.

Yeah. As someone who makes things with their hands, dismemberment is a HUGE FUCKING DEAL & it shouldn't be done to characters lightly.

My MC losing part of their right leg going to save their friends has impacted their life since. If you're maiming someone as "justice", you're not being heroic.

Dismemberment is rough, but people getting completely frozen and chipped or broken is what gets to me.

Out of curiosity, does dismemberment of, like, corpses also bother you or is it just living characters?

The suddenness of this Brick Joke Sloth did get funnier the longer it went on. Like, my child understands comedic timing. Good for her.

7-yo told me to watch her puppet show in her room. 1st Act consisted of stuffed animals making out when a flying sloth comes out of nowhere & tackles one off screen.

2nd Act is a pig stuffie that sits on unsuspecting victims. The sloth swoops.

3rd is two dinos eaten by a giant squirrel. SLOTH.

I'm an insane outlier and my weekly games are usually 12hrs, from like 3pm to 3am. But we're all in person where the energy is hype. I don't think I could do that with an online game.

Hostility isn't a basic mode I operate with other people unless they give me an actual reason, like being a creep wearing doxxing glasses. My phone isn't a weapon. I look up space facts & plant names on it. I don't post pics of my friends/fam on soc/med.

We aren't our weight, & weight is not a moral failure. It's genetics, health conditions, habits & the fillers our gov puts into our food. It ALL affects what we look like.

The fact that you're trying IS enough. Health'm is a need. Numbers are a want. & you wouldn't judge your friends like yourself.

🫂 Ah, I'm so sorry. I get it. I was lucky enough that my mom was super anti-fatshaming while emphasizing actual health, but my dad...uh...said plenty about women's bodies. Including Mom's. I came out with less weight trauma than many, but it still wiggles in the back of the mind when already sad.
