James Watson, dead at 97, was a scientific legend and a pariah among his peers
James Watson, the co-discoverer of the structure of DNA who died Thursday at 97, was a scientific legend and a pariah among his peers.
A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.
Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."
Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

I had a mid-career fellowship and it was exactly what I needed to finish my book. The BA application forms are far simpler than you might expect if youβve only ever seen forms for other funders. So, if youβre eligible, do explore further. Best of luck if you apply.

Trump and Murdoch, kings of shamelessness
The US president has one thing in common with the media mogul
A beautiful, quietly furious piece by @henrymance.ft.com on the shamelessness of those around Epstein, particularly Trump, and of Rupert Murdoch:

Late 1992: Stella Rimington was invited to lunch at Buckingham Palace. Uncertain of protocols re the first publicly named spy chief, the royals announced it in the Court Circular. Dozens of press turned up desperate for pics and so the royal household had to help her slink out a back exit.

The UK should recognize a Palestinian state now
The time is right to make this symbolically important move, says Bronwen Maddox, but that should not distract attention from the most urgent task of securing relief in Gaza.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer should lead his cabinet to agreement on recognizing a Palestinian state now.

Gaza: BBC's Jeremy Bowen goes onboard a plane dropping aid
The BBC's international editor was on a Jordanian flight as it dropped supplies into Gaza.
"The Israelis don't want us to film out of the window at the devastation inside Gaza. But I've spent 10 mins looking at it with my own eyes and I can tell you communities in the north of Gaza, that I knew well, are flat. There's nothing left of them."
