It doesn't save your preference. I'm constantly switching between two Discord accounts and every time I do, it returns to Halloween sounds. They drive me mad. 🥲

In fairness, I don't think it's that common for people to use it to address you ("Hey boss!") rather than just describing your role in relation to them ("My boss said..."). I don't think I've ever actually called anyone boss to their face before. 😂

Context is always going to be important. In the context I'm working with, I don't think 'boss' feels out of place. It didn't occur to me that it might feel like a gendered term. That may just be more vibes-based than in it's actual usage. It's normal to call people of all genders "my boss", right?

Picking one word that could apply to everyone (AMAB and AFAB) in a relatively casual context is tricky. I wonder, do you think "boss" might be acceptable? e.g. you tell someone to do something and they say "Yes, boss!"

I've heard of that. I suppose that works for a more formal or official context. Feels odd to me but that might just be lack of familiarity. You're right, there might be something to it.

I appreciate the replies so far! For context, imagine a video game where you select your pronouns on startup. I want a character to refer to you in such a way without you having to granularly specify all your terms of address. In this case, learning individual preference isn't really viable.

That's an option. It still feels like a substantial jump in regality, but I'll keep it on the table!

I've also seen "sir" used in gender-neutral contexts and majority opinion seems to be in favour of that, but it might still be considered masculine in many cases. I could imagine AMAB people not being too pleased about it, maybe?

Side note, I've seen things like "xir" and, aside from it not being widely recognised, things like this make me think of Musk's "X is a cool letter so I'll use it everywhere" mentality. Doesn't mean I won't recognise it if that's what NBs want but I have to believe there are better options.

Is there a non-binary equivalent of "sir" or "ma'am"? Looking for something that demonstrates subservience without going to some extreme like "master" or "gobbess". After googling it, the only answers I find are basically memeing and they don't feel like they carry much weight when used in earnest.
