Since we were talking about pigments on stream: ultramarine used to be made out of ground up lapis lazuli—so that might be a good paint color to buy!

Paper is tangible, which is always a plus. A lot of the skills transfer over, it’s painting that’s more or less completely different due to the presence of layer blending modes in digital.

It has to first "not make sense," before it can click and "make sense"

A serene celestial scene with soft and subtle blue clouds and a scattering of stars. The three brightest stars are nestled within a central hollow of the nebula. Their light gently reflects from the nearby cloud rim, shadowing into a vignette at the periphery. A few of the stars stand out with an orange glow. There is a tiny but noteworthy orange "hamburger" of an accreting star in the left half of the image. Looking closer, one can see the "buns" are actually broad cones of light and the "patty" is the shadow of the accreting disk of dust. The star itself is unseen. This is actually the subject of study for the image.

Worked on this yesterday with my new found free time with the kid starting school.

Also, overthinking makes it more difficult to pick up the pencil, as it adds an emotional charge to the entire act of drawing, and requires one to spend more mental energy getting over the “gravitas barrier” (for lack of a better term).

Instead: try just drawing ✍️

I wasn’t sure about posting this one since it was more of an experiment with a “pencil-ish” style, and not as rendered as usual… but I still like the feeling of frustration it gives, and figured why the heck not—especially since the feeling of overwhelming frustration is very common nowadays…
