Don't start with 'sorry' - or anything that sounds like one

“Time for the dull bit”

“I won’t go on too long”

"I haven't really prepared anything"

. Instead, try these opening techniques.

These public health researchers did not choose to be political activists; they were forced to be by a president and administration that despises expertise.

A passionate plea that completely resonates with me.

"...Don’t you dare call me unpatriotic for refusing to worship corruption. Don’t you dare tell me that loving this country enough to fight for it makes me the enemy. That isn’t patriotism. That’s rot. That’s decay..."

bangs.

"They was terrified. The kids was crying. People was screaming. They looked very distraught. I was out there crying when I seen the little girl come around the corner, because they was bringing the kids down, too, had them zip tied to each other," Watson said. "That's all I kept asking. What is the morality? Where's the human? One of them literally laughed. He was standing right here. He said, 'f*** them kids.'"

Watson said trucks and military-style vans were used to separate parents from their children. Other neighbors said agents destroyed property to get in the building.

"They had a big, 15-inch chainsaw with round blade on it, cutting this fence down," said witness Darrell Ballard. "We're under siege. We're being invaded by our own military."

“Fuck them kids.”

That’s literally what an ICE agent said when ICE, the FBI et al. raided an apartment in Chicago, including with a Blackhawk helicopter, separated children from their parents, and zip-tied them to each other.

ETHICAL IMPLICATIONS OF STUDY TERMINATIONS
As of July 2025, the National Institutes of Health has terminated approx-
imately 4700 of the grants it awarded for scientific research, training, and
infrastructure.1 Very little of the public discourse regarding the grant ter-
minations has focused on their implications for research participants who
were or would have been enrolled in the trials the grants supported. The
terminated awards are linked to 200 active registered clinical trials, which
had a total planned enrollment of more than 689 000 human subjects,
approximately 20% of whom are infants, children, and adolescents.1
Nearly all the affected trials that included children and adolescents
focused on stigmatized health issues (eg, HIV, substance use, depression),
and/or persons with marginalized identities (eg, sexual and gender minor-
ity; Black or African American and Latiné). Individuals with marginalized
identities are underrepresented in clinical research,2 even when they are
at greater risk for the illness under study. The issue of underrepresenta-
tion in research is especially relevant for minor adolescents (those youn-
ger than 18 years old) because of ethical and legal barriers to their
participation. Barriers include concerns about minors’ capacity to consent,
confidentiality of sensitive information (sexual behavior, substance use)
when parental consent is required, and researcher and institutional con-
cerns about liability when waivers of parental consent are granted for
minors’ enrollment.3
As adolescent health researchers, we have each invested over a decade
of work to address the complex ethical and legal issues that prevent ado-
lescents from participating in research, especially on sensitive or stigma-
tized health issues. Through meticulous efforts to engage and build trust
with adolescents, parents or guardians, and regulatory personnel, we have
enrolled thousands of adolescents in our studies...

mass grant terminations might be over for now, but their impact still harms people who were in the studies, including kids & teens. @knelphd.bsky.social @amyknopf.bsky.social and I wrote about ethical implications of abruptly ending studies for political reasons publications.aap.org/pediatrics/a...

Here is a word cloud of the words that were missing from the noncompetitive renewal awards but had been present in the parent award.

I looked a grants where the title was different between the original award and the noncompetitive renewal and limited the analysis to grants with no subawards so there was no ambiguity about what to compare.

There were 777 such grant pairs.
