Statement from the National Political Committee. DSA Hopes Honduras Will One Day be Free from US Imperialism. 1/4. 12/8/25. As socialists, we fight for a world where the working class of the Global South can exercise its democratic rights free from intervention by the United States. Once again, the US government has intervened, blackmailed, & manipulated the democratic process in the 2025 Honduran elections. A few days before Election Day on November 30, Donald Trump expressed support for the National Party of Honduras’s narco-candidate Tito Asfura & threatened to economically punish the Honduran people if a different candidate won. Less than one day after the elections, on 12/1, Trump pardoned and released former National Party leader & narco-dictator Juan Orlando Hernandez, a man so corrupt he was extradited to the United States in 2022 where he had been serving a 45 years sentence for trafficking drugs and weapons. His release casts a dark cloud over the people of Honduras.

Since Election Day, both the center-right Liberal Party and the democratic socialist Libre Party have denounced serious failures and irregularities in the vote counting process, including uneven shares of biometrics-verified votes across different parties and significant errors in the transmission of vote tally sheets. We join other international organizations and observers in calling for a complete and transparent counting of every ballot to protect the integrity of the election.

While the electoral future remains unclear for the people of Honduras, what is clear is that the interference by US actors in the electoral process is an expression of imperialism threatening the rights and sovereignty of Honduras and any nations of Latin America who refute the logic of extraction and exploitation in favor of social investment and public welfare. DSA stands in unwavering support for the democratic socialist party of Libre and el pueblo hondureño and unequivocal condemnation of US interference, be it by blackmail or at the end of a barrel as happened with the coup in 2009.

While Honduras is no longer a “banana republic” under the domination of the United Fruit Company (now known as Chiquita), its economy is still dominated by ten families who control 90% of the country’s wealth. This is at the behest of U.S. imperial interest with support from bloated war-mongerers from Miami, Florida such as Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Congressperson Maria Elvira Salazar, who would love nothing more than to return the country to its dark past. As contract negotiations stall, UMass union to take “no confidence” vote against chancellor After more than 40 bargaining sessions, UMass is asking the state for a mediator, which union members say could force the university's final offer on them.

For more than 500 days, unionized staff members working for the University of Massachusetts Amherst have been negotiating a new contract, but disagreements over pay increases and working conditions continue. They say that the university has requested a state-appointed mediator.

Northampton tenants continue fight against rent hikes Members of the West Street Tenants Association are organizing to pressure their wealthy landlord: Smith College.

With an endowment of more than $2.5 billion and around 100 rental units in Northampton, Smith College is the wealthiest landlord in Northampton. Since June, tenants in the West Street neighborhood have been getting organized, demanding repairs, increase caps, and more.

For over a century, oppressed and exploited people around the world have carried the banner of socialism in the struggle to free themselves from a system that sees them as nothing more than raw material for a profit-making machine. Today, socialists in the U.S. are leading the fight to democratize our economy and our government, to stop the endless wars at home and abroad, and to ensure that the wealth of the nation belongs to those who create it. The Senators and members of Congress who oppose those goals have no program of their own to offer other than more suffering to maintain the status quo.
