NEW AON DRAWING 🤯

Off the coast of Jurassic Northern Ireland, it is not an uncommon sight to see Megalosaurus bucklandii and Scelidosaurus harrisonii - two fierce rivals - battling it out in an intense series of matches in their favorite sport, Gaelic handball.

A compact and robustly built Albertosaurus with green and black striped stalks through a vine-covered forest, turning to the side to reveal its long snout. The forest floor is densely carpeted by ferns, and several roots and logs are scattered about.

A slim, almost emaciated Daspletosaurus strides alongside a narrow winding stream with sandy banks. A crocodile-like champsosaur splashes out of its way, splashing the clear blue water in its panic. Reedy vegetation flanks part of the stream, and thick trunks dominate the right part of the scene.

I’m once again thinking of strange contrasts in the palaeoart of my childhood. These paintings, by Brian Franczak and Ely Kish, depict Albertosaurus and Daspletosaurus and have broadly similar compositions, but their approaches to restoring the dinosaurs are about as different as you could get.

A recent piece I did for work - Archaeopteryx! Don't get too excited though, this isn't a concept for a VFX animal, moreso just a one-off illustration. It was a really fun exercise in learning how to render out bigger swathes of feathers!

A young girl in red shorts lounges in the twisting branches of a surreal treetop that stands skeletal against azure sky. Ammonite fossils are embedded up its trunk with the largest seated at the base of its crown. Limbs curl and knot to form the outline of what the treetop might look like if fleshed out, but no leaves remain. The wood is dry, weathered and without life. More arborous aberrations sit along the horizon in the fading sky. The treetops are elongated, bulbous and brain-like with twisting ridges that suggest folds in gray matter. Flying high, a line of seagulls glide past with wings spread wide, migrating away from whatever captured the girl’s attention off-panel right.

No seriously, that's what the caption says. This is from the 1910 book "The Book of the Animal Kingdom: Mammals" by William Percival Westell.

20 years ago today....

This #fossilfriday, we move in time to the #Permian when the #amphibian Seymouria sanjuanensis lived in what is New Mexico today. Clusters of large animals like this one are rarely found in the #fossil record, especially this well preserved.

From Late Jurassic China, "hidden dragon" is by far the earliest known ceratopsian. Due to its basal condition, it shows features previously thought to be exclusive to pachycephalosaurs. Its stomach preserves gastroliths.

Who here loves big extinct cephalopods? in my opinion the Ordovician period got the best!
