Louisiana colleges have started paying athletes millions. They wonβt say who gets how much.
College sports powerhouses have guarded athlete salary records from the public and their competitors, blocking open records requests.
For the first time, universities can directly pay their student athletes. But how much is Garrett Nussmeier making from LSU? What are other schools paying? We filed records requests with every college in the state. They wonβt give specifics:

Trees in New Orleans often carry memories of hurricane damage. But as @sam-karlin.bsky.social explores in his series on rising summer temps and heat deaths in Louisiana, trees can make a huge difference in cooling down cities. Still, our canopy is sparse

In Louisiana, heat-related deaths have soared. The quiet disaster is βgoing to get worse.β

As summers in Louisiana get hotter, heat-related deaths are soaring.
But itβs a quiet disaster, @sam-karlin.bsky.social

The Orleans Parish jail abandoned its high security unit. Years of violence, trouble followed.
Most jails segregate their most problematic detainees. The New Orleans jail abandoned that years ago.
Years before 10 inmates broke out of the New Orleans jail, the sheriff eliminated a high-risk security unit. That now appears to have been a critical misstep that helped to allow for last monthβs escape.
