Controlling one's environment is in fact a technique for avoiding undesired behaviours.

Part of me thinks these idiots are going to be the end of human civilization, but then I remember Mark Carney just signed off on a pipeline and there's a nonzero chance he gets rid of EV mandates and the industrial carbon price before he's done.

I've just realized today that a food processor will do this job just as well. Which is good, because now GF graham crumbs are thin on the ground, but it's funny how shocking it was just to realize that was an option.

One of "my" things at Christmas when I was a kid was making nanaimo bars. We didn't always have easy access to crumbled graham or walnuts, so there's a kind of low-key trauma memory of taking a meat tenderizer and beating the absolute shit out of bags of crackers and nuts.

One of the things I love most about writing is the changes it works in me, myself.

Prepare for all of your strip bacon to be replaced with Canadian bacon. We are merciless.

If you told 25 year old me that what fiscal conservatives would eventually decide to add to the mix for wider appeal was blatant hate speech, I think his head would have fallen off his body like a classic Barbie.

I have been worried about the USA for nearly a decade now, but I must have turned some kind of corner on it because this morning I find myself womdering what happens if Orange Sook quits in a fit of pique.

And TBH I've been guilty of that sometimes! But if the AI wars have taught me anything, it's that I need to think about art in terms of expressions of humanity, not commercial purposes.

This whole thread is a great reminder that *resembling* the right output and *being* the right output are not at all the same

Either you understand that there is an organized campaign to push trans people out of public life with the explicit end goal of "morally mandating us out of existence" that is backed by some of the wealthiest individuals to have ever lived, or you're simply not equipped to grasp what's happening.

Would be content with shaming it back to specialized niches where it might actually be of value, like scientific research, but if push comes to shove...

You will not regret buying this book. It's frickin great.

Yesterday I saw a comment on r/writers that scolded someone who has written SEVENTEEN BOOKS for writing in a niche that's "not commercially viable", and I really wondered wtf that commenter thinks writing is FOR.

The ruling class is so insanely greedy, they'll keep firing people, making cuts, and scratching their heads about why the economy is dying and everyone hates them.

I try not to be an old curmudgeon but this "techno Simple Plan-esque" rendition of Come All Ye Faithful is sorely testing my resolve.

If you're faculty in any sort of public college in a red state, you're liable to have someone make a spectacle of your course, assignments, or teaching, run to social media, and get you fired for it because they disagree. You can't run a university like this.

Canada which was known worldwide as hewers of wood and oil, drawers of water.
We handed over raw materials at lower margins, to watch other nations prosper w/ much higher revenues/margins when they turned those raw materials into finished goods.
And to use those funds to serve & support the people.

What we absolutely *should* be doing is figuring out what to do with the 500k or so people directly and indirectly employed by O&G in AB when that industry dies. Not to mention the 15k or so in NL, and the 26k or so in SK. There are lots of ideas, but the longer we wait the harder it gets.

It's important to realize that any new Canadian pipeline would inevitably act to lower the price of fossil fuels, extending the damage that we're doing to the climate. There's probably an economic case to do it anyway? But the ethical case Does Not Exist.

And if Carney did this disingenuously, counting on private industry to balk at funding the construction? That's an abnegation of the duty of leadership. I recognize that we live in a time where folks are grandstanding rather than leading, but that doesn't mean we should give them a pass on it.

I see the price of CPAP machines is now tracking the theoretical performance of index funds, that is to say, rising at an average of 10% annually. Awesome.
