Given the apparent importance of International Law (!).. UDHR Article 14 recognises a right to seek asylum from persecution + Refugee Convention limits penalising refugees for irregular entry. The question is protection need and credibility, not whether someone first held a student visa. 4/

If many claims from these countries are granted, that undercuts the blanket ‘abuse’ framing and suggests protection needs exist. Home Office stats show wide variation, with Sudan at 94% grants at initial decision in YE Dec 2025. 3/

There's no supporting evidence of sham sponsorship, document fraud, non-attendance, enforcement outcomes, or refusals tied to misrepresentation. There’s no ‘asylum visa’ and so the structure makes route-switching predictable for people who later need protection. 2/

These 'changes' include using an ‘emergency brake’ to stop sponsored study visas from Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar and Sudan, plus skilled worker visas for Afghans, citing ‘visa abuse’. The 'evidence' for this is patchy trend data, not proof of fraud or ‘abuse’. 1/ bsky.app/profile/news...

In these circumstances, IPSO found that there was a serious failure to take care not to publish inaccurate information and a breach of Clause 1 (i). The Committee acknowledged that, given the unusual circumstances of the case, the publication could not identify each specific inaccuracy in the article and correct it; this followed from its earlier failure to take care. Nonetheless, the consequence was that the publication could not verify any of the remaining details in the article in a manner which would allow it to adequately correct the record in the manner required by the Code.
