When I was a young gay man I sat with my elders who recalled the early days of the Gay Liberation Front, the Gay News blasphemy trial and cruising on the Heath.
These bold men and women refused to remain in the closet, despite widespread hostility against LGBTQ people.

I had a year-long course on the language when I was an undergrad. (Taught by Thomas Lambdin himself.)
Enjoyed it immensely.

I will note, however, that almost all the texts you read will be about martyrs! Some people enjoy that; others maybe not so much.

I was going to post about this earlier โ€” in the 1950s, โ€œintegrationโ€ was the same scapegoat for *everything* that DEI has become today. The same scapegoating was deployed even earlier for abolition, and then later for multiculturalism. Different codewords, same racism.

Wild poppies, the first blooms after wildfires, inspired Leah Mata Fragua's installation for Fire Kinship - a planned exhibit at UCLAโ€™s Fowler Museum. Using natural dyes and soundscapes, it reflects fire's cycles and ties to Indigenous knowledge. Read more: sarweb.org/blog-wild-po...

This particular root is reconstructible at least to Georgian-Zan *ฤŸu(d)-, as it is found in Megrelian and Laz:

Megrelian แƒฆแƒฃแƒ“แƒ ฤŸuda warm, heated
Laz แƒฆแƒฃแƒ›แƒ˜ ฤŸumi dust, sand
Laz แƒฆแƒฃแƒ›แƒ˜แƒแƒ แƒ˜ ฤŸumiari smoke

As with many expressive roots, the specific semantics of each word varies greatly.

This week my employer of 17 years English Heritage announced 200 jobs lost, and my Alma mater Cardiff Uni announced 400 jobs lost. The planning system that protects our heritage and provides thousands of archaeology jobs is at risk, and Higher Education is in free fall more generally #ThisIsFine

For anyone wondering, some possible dog names have survived from cuneiform sources.

On tiny dog figurines found buried under a palace in Nineveh, Iraq are inscriptions that seem to be names.

Adolph Diesterweg (1790-1866), educator and father of publisher Moritz Diesterweg, in 1830 wrote *Praktischer Lehrgang* for German teachers. AFAIK it contains the first clause-internal graphical analysis. The use of braces is actually well thought-out. #linguistics

Ghosts in ancient Mesopotamia causes all kinds of medical issues. Vertigo, depression, and more.

This therapy to treat someone seized by a ghost prescribed fumigation with pig, wolf, dog, fox, and gazelle poop, and other stuff that smelled awful. Seems a good way to get rid of a ghost was to stink

Another site showed me this from 4 years ago, a most memorable (and for me impactful) day at the University of California. I later gave away the K, but I like the picture, showing me and the elided K overshadowed by a very much non-elided H (for Hearst).

Thereโ€™s a lot going on, but this is not only very petty, itโ€™s also extremely racist. The indigenous people of Alaska wanted to have Denali recognized by its real name. And a Day One priority for this administration is to make sure they know theyโ€™re not considered stakeholders, rather subjects.

Tetracerus quadricornis, the four horned antelope, also called the chausingha, has four names, all of which mean "four-horns" on a different language.
All four of those names are built from words that trace back to the Proto-Indo-European words for "four" and "horn".

A ribbon bound copy of the 1967 Sexual Offences Act.

Homosexuality was only partially decriminalised in England and Wales in 1967.
Itโ€™s estimated that 15,000 men were arrested for being gay after the Sexual Offences Act 1967 passed, a greater number than when homosexuality had been entirely illegal.
