AI BOOSTER BINGO
The squares read:
I might get attacked for saying this
Imagine what it'll do in 5 years
Al critics are just afraid
Al is better than you
Everyone is doing it
"Levels the playing Field"
Your time will be spent on work that MATTERS
Your time will be spent correcting the Al's errors
MORE VOLUME!!
Shit outputs? Switch to [alternate LLM]
Yes jobs will be cut...
Humans aren't perfect either
It's FUN!!!
No practical advice
"Sorry bluesky"
Solution to chronic underfunding
What if it could cure cancer???
I made something that appears passable
No need for pesky underlings
Is it accurate? No. But...
Framing human work as "bespoke, hand-crafted"
Get with it or get left behind!!!
Al critics are luddites

Grammarly, an app that is probably at least partly responsible for the dearth of copy editor/proofreader jobs these days (never underestimate douchebro CEOs who'd rather cheap out than pay actual people), is pulling shenanigans like this? I AM SO SHOCKED.

Three jobs I'm 100% qualified for and that I've applied to in the past few weeks have been reposted and I think my head is going to explode at this point. (Oh, wait, the shrapnel of my oldness might hit the 30something hiring manager if that happens. Silly me, I'll just grab the nearest ice floe.)

My dad's town FB page had a post from someone concerned that the non-emergency police line is now answered by AI. The post is getting responses from other residents like "so you're against new tech?" And "this is the way of the world, we have to get used to it." JFC 😐

Summer 84 is just incredible. The Classic AT40 channel on iHeart has had June 30 in its rotation for years and it's one of my favorite countdowns.

Last snow storm I turned onto the highway behind an SUV with a mountain of snow on the roof. I moved into the lane next to them, fearing the snow would hit me, but it slid down their windshield and blocked their view instead. They were able to pull over instead of, you know, hurt someone. But still.

Already saw one person drive past my house with a foot of snow on the roof of their car. Feeling really great about driving/walking the next few days 😐

A tape measure in 23 inches of snow.
A Little Free Library almost completely covered in snow
A dormant rose bush almost completely weighed down by snow.
I'm not sure what the actual snow total is because my yard seems to be one big drift. My sidewalk is 23 inches (probably influenced by the 3-foot fence on one side). Pray for my back.

Don Draper gif, except it says "That's what the stale bagels are for!" (Corporate natural-disaster disconnect is the WORST. "Use your best judgment" feels like such a trap.)

Literally me last summer: "Half a tree fell in my yard last night, but I have to be in the office today to meet my RTO quota. I'll get up at 4:30 AM to cut up some branches to put at the curb for municipal collection today so they're not blocking the sidewalk all weekend."

One good thing about unemployment is that if I were still working at my old job, I'd be WFH today...and desperately trying to keep up with shoveling while juggling my workload. I miss having $, but do ~not~ miss balancing PITA-but-necessary home owner sh*t with deadlines.

Accumulated snow in an open doorway with the snow-covered porch beyond it.
Cleared the snow from the (covered) front porch last night, back this morning. A persistent li'l mofo!

A record spinning on a record player with the sleeve to Journey's Greatest Hits behind it.
The soundtrack to my household's A-Team-esque prep montage (which included baking a pan of emotional support brownies) before the incoming snowy chaos. In Steve Perry's voice we trust.

Thanking the US for wrapping that up and the medal ceremony happening fairly quickly because the weather is deteriorating and with it goes my antenna connection (I have Peacock but it's running behind and I like my sports as live as possible). Wind and snow, man.

NBC 4's snow map, showing "2 ft possible where heaviest bands set up" aka my part of New Jersey
Y'all, we are currently in the "2 ft possible" swath and there's like 18-19 inches between my dog's belly and the ground. She will not even be able to go to the bathroom in this. (She was deeply unhappy in the 11 inches we got three weeks ago 😐)

Clarence, an orange striped cat, looks thoughtful as he sleepily ponders why chicks would ever come before ducks.
"IRL we would shun the lady for not adhering to the 'chicks before d*cks' philosophy but here we'll ignore that she's trying to steal her friend's man because the song's so dang catchy."

I have a wooden swan on my front lawn whose head was only visible for almost a month and only just got completely defrosted two days ago. I'm hoping the above-freezing temps this week makes this more of a "normal" melting scenario 😩

Blizzard Prep dictates that if Don't Go Breaking My Heart is playing at the way-too-crowded-at-7:30 AM ShopRite, you must act out both the Elton John AND Kiki Dee parts. I don't make the rules.

A photo of Derek Jeter and then-girlfriend Vanessa Minnilo playfully interacting next to a blurb with the headline/subhead: SQUEEZE PLAY: D.J.'S A HIT WITH VJ. Blurb text (that I did not write): Baseball star Derek Jeter just won the Gold Glove, but here he's
winning the Gold Shove in a playful game with his girlfriend, MTV VJ Vanessa Minnillo. The New York Yankee captain horsed around with Vanessa at the Ritz-Carlton in Kapalua, Hawaii. Vanessa looked somewhat different from earlier in the week (below when she wore a fat suit for a stunt on MTV's TRL program.
Author of published books, short stories, brand copy and full-length articles? Sure. This headline and subhead I wrote as a (die-hard Yankees fan) copy editor for a celeb news mag in 2005? Still my proudest writerly accomplishment 😆

Anyway, seeing customers call out AI-introduced errors/how terrible its output looks on my old co.'s subreddit has been super vindicating the last few months. Maybe don't cut people when the team you're forcing the automated, error-making toddler onto is already stretched thin, just a thought?
