Next week "Mark Steel's in Town" is from Oakham.
But, no, Oakham is NOT "proudly twinned with Paris" - that is the small village of Whitwell (even if the Parisians don’t know).

And one from #Rutland -
In 1839, "after a tedious courtship of 504 hours, Mr. Robert Harbutt, a brisk bachelor of 23, to Mrs. Catlin, a buxom widow of 75."
The wife may even have shaved a few years off; when Elizabeth died in 1844, her age was recorded as 84 years.
And the clock on the tower isn't even showing the right time ...

29.08.2025 08:35 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Screenshot of a section from Notes & Queries of 1872. It says "NOSE-BLEEDING - I was told on July 18, in the county-town of Rutland, by a woman who kept a small shop, the following infallible remedy to stop nose-bleeding in an unmarried female: "Tie a new piece of red ribbon round her neck." This charm did not apply to the male sex, or to married women. My informant firmly believed in its efficacy, and told me that she knew many cases in which it had been tried with success. She was, apparently, upwards of fifty years of age; and said that her mother had taught her this charm when she was a girl. CUTHBERT BEDE"
Right then, unmarried ladies. Cuthbert Bede has a handy solution for you if you suffer from nosebleeds.

The Uppingham Workhouse was used as a VAD hospital in the First World War; it is now a boarding house of Uppingham School.

Barleythorpe remained a hamlet, built largely for estate workers of the hall, until the last dozen years or so when large new housing estates have been built on the edge of Oakham.
A #Rutland County Council by-election for Barleythorpe ward is being held on Thursday this week.
