At Thorney, there is a gravestone with the same design.

Masons copying from the same pattern book, presumably.

BBC Radio 4 - Mark Steel's in Town, Series 14, 1. Oakham Find out how hanging horseshoes upside down helps the people of Oakham vanquish the devil.

Next week "Mark Steel's in Town" is from Oakham.

But, no, Oakham is NOT "proudly twinned with Paris" - that is the small village of Whitwell (even if the Parisians don’t know).

And one from #Rutland -

In 1839, "after a tedious courtship of 504 hours, Mr. Robert Harbutt, a brisk bachelor of 23, to Mrs. Catlin, a buxom widow of 75."

The wife may even have shaved a few years off; when Elizabeth died in 1844, her age was recorded as 84 years.

Inside UK's smartest town with top marks notched up by A-level pupils Earlier this month, Rutland beat Surrey for the second year in succession to top the list of counties with the greatest number of high A-level grades.

#Rutland has a very positive write up in the Daily Mail.

(But some pics of 'Oakham' are actually Uppingham)

Happy Rutland Day. The flag of Rutland is flying in New Palace Yard today to mark this historic county day.

Did you know that Rutland has been referenced in the Chamber on more than 7000 occasions?

Screenshot of a section from Notes & Queries of 1872. It says "NOSE-BLEEDING - I was told on July 18, in the county-town of Rutland, by a woman who kept a small shop, the following infallible remedy to stop nose-bleeding in an unmarried female: "Tie a new piece of red ribbon round her neck." This charm did not apply to the male sex, or to married women. My informant firmly believed in its efficacy, and told me that she knew many cases in which it had been tried with success. She was, apparently, upwards of fifty years of age; and said that her mother had taught her this charm when she was a girl.

Right then, unmarried ladies. Cuthbert Bede has a handy solution for you if you suffer from nosebleeds.

In 1843 at Uppingham, an assistant to the surgeon took out the heart of a pauper lying in the dead-room at the poor-house.

He concealed it in his pocket and afterwards delivered a "lecture" upon it before the Oddfellows' lodge at a public-house.

Well - that is the legend.

He died two days after he was mauled by a lion in a cage in Skegness where he made a spectacle of himself. Whether his death was caused by the lion 'Freddie' or by the doctor is uncertain.

Barleythorpe remained a hamlet, built largely for estate workers of the hall, until the last dozen years or so when large new housing estates have been built on the edge of Oakham.

A #Rutland County Council by-election for Barleythorpe ward is being held on Thursday this week.
