An antique, square-format, black and white photograph captures a small, metal relief sculpture of an angel mounted on a textured stone wall, likely a cemetery gatepost or a church tower. The angel, possibly Saint Michael the Archangel, is depicted in a triumphant pose, slaying a dragon or demon below his feet.

Above the sculpture, a decorative, wrought-iron arch or gatework frames the angel, with intricate scrollwork and pointed Gothic elements that draw the eye toward the central figure. The low-angle perspective emphasizes the height of the post and the dramatic nature of the scene, creating a sense of scale and shadow.

A low-angle, black and white photograph of a cobbled street leading uphill, called Keere Street. In the foreground, a dark metal sign post holds a rectangular sign with white lettering. The sign reads: "KEERE STREET NO THROUGH ROAD" and provides a historical note: "Although recorded in history that George, when Prince Regent, drove a coach and four down Keere Street for a wager, access by vehicles to and from the High Street is now forbidden. BY ORDER LEWES DISTRICT COUNCIL." The street is lined with historic brick and painted houses. Trees overhang the left side, and a strong shadow of the signpost falls on the cobblestones.

Lewes is a beautiful historic town in East Sussex not far from Brighton. The White Hart Inn is a fabulous overnight stay and there is plenty to explore and photograph.

A high-grain, black and white photograph captures the ruins of the West Pier in Brighton, England, silhouetted against a vast, cloudy sky and the churning sea. The pier's skeletal, burnt-out dome and fragmented supports jut out from the water in the middle distance. In the foreground, the shingle beach slopes down, with a single, small, dark figure standing near the water's edge on the lower right, adding a sense of scale and solitude to the dramatic, textured scene. The photograph evokes a somber, atmospheric mood.

A grainy, high-contrast, black and white photograph, likely taken with a pinhole or toy camera, shows a low, wide stone wall heavily textured with moss in the foreground. The wall is out of focus, emphasizing its rugged surface. In the middle ground, a small, white wooden building, possibly a cricket pavilion or park shelter, stands behind the wall, surrounded by dense trees and shrubs. Looming in the background on a hill is a partial view of a large, stone castle or fortified building, its tower silhouetted against a bright, cloudy sky. The deep depth of field gives the image a distinctive, slightly distorted aesthetic.

More from #holgaweek. This time the delightfully English county town of Lewes. Enclosed bowls green on the top of a hill with a white washed club house and a castle in the background. Anyone for cucumber sandwiches and a pot of tea?

A dramatic, low-angle, black-and-white photograph shows a sculpture of a winged figureβ€”possibly an angel or a classical heroβ€”clinging to the rough, vertical surface of a tall, cylindrical stone tower.

The figure is dynamic, suspended in a mid-air pose, arms outstretched with large wings spread behind it. It wears a helmet or hat and a short, pleated skirt. The camera angle looks sharply upward, making the tower appear massive and the sky bright and distant. The graininess and high contrast of the photo enhance the texture of the stone and the sense of drama.

A grainy, high-contrast, black and white photo taken from inside a dilapidated seaside shelter. The perspective looks out through grimy window panes and vertical metal supports to the promenade, which has a railing and several empty benches. Beyond the benches, the sea stretches toward the horizon under a bright, cloudy sky. In the foreground, the wooden slats of a bench inside the shelter are visible, along with a faded mural or etching on the wall to the lower left, possibly of a sailboat. The image has a vignette effect and a vintage, melancholy feel.

Enjoyed my first visit to Brighton. I hadn't quite expected the scale of it. Will have to return.

August in an Instant – updateΒ 3 On seven out of the last eight days I’ve used an instant image for my ongoing 365 picture-a-day project. As we approach the end of week three though I have finally accepted that I’m not going to get everything done that I wanted to for this challenge. Not least because of more child minding commitments than anticipated throughout the month and now our planned holiday, which was due to start on 1st September, is now due to start on the 27th August.

August in an Instant - update 3 and the tenth blog post from this months #believeinfilm #instant challenge. This week #Instax gets a turn

Serendipity Squared I’ve often written about the importance of serendipity in my photography. Recently I have been playing with in-camera double exposures, considered and deliberate, I thought carefully about what I photographed and how I combined them. Serendipity still plays a supporting roll of course. It got me thinking and I thought I’d try to tempt serendipity with a film swap. Enlisting the support of good friend John we both shot a roll of 35mm film in readiness to then swap these rolls for the other to double expose.

A high-contrast, grainy black and white photograph shows a person seated alone on a wooden bench, facing away from the camera and looking out towards the sea. The person is wearing headphones and a jacket. The bench casts a strong, long shadow towards the camera, emphasizing the bright sun and dramatic sky with scattered clouds. A metal railing separates the person from the water, which appears slightly blurry. The overall feeling is one of solitude and contemplation.

Surprisingly the Blue Holga TLR held up nicely into the sun for this contre jour portrait down on Brighton promenade at the weekend.

Quite pleased with this one, might make the entry selection
