Exactly! This then led to discussions about how many heads/tails in a row is suspicious, and if we put them all together for a run of 560, would that still be suspicious.

In #mathstoday (yesterday), Y12 Further Maths tried to fool each other by writing what they thought a run of Heads/Tails could look like, then doing a real one. They were very good at detecting fake randomness!

Loved reading this - thank you! Am going to try dropping in some of those in my spiel. Completely agree about coasting, and that’s something we’re trying to tackle as a department.

I always use the graphs. It’s what I used when I did A-level, and it helps them practise sketching them ready for transformations and modelling. I show them CAST, but I find some label it incorrectly and it can become a hindrance.

In #mathstoday with Y12 we looked at suspended moments. They often struggle to visualise what these look like, so we looked at the tension in the ‘strings’ as well as the point of tilting.

A 2kg mass on a slope supported by a lab jack. A string attaches the mass to a dangling mass via a pulley.

In #MathsToday we first calculated FMax by raising the slope to the point of sliding, then set up a situation with a pulley where pupils calculated the amount of mass to add to the hanging end to pull the mass up the slope (to the nearest 0.1kg). Very satisfying to see!

The films are brilliant, but I know what you mean! I think I saw the cartoon version before I read it, which only covers half the story. Even so, it did influence how I saw the characters. Still love it!

Feeling like I want to read The Lord of the Rings again… The rising of a threat in a far away land, subservient men corrupted after taking riches from an evil mastermind, rulers being cowed into taking no action against the threat, insignificant people doing what they can to resist…

I did exactly the same during an online lesson during lockdown 🤣 I blamed it on having a 1 year old….

All the time - they think I’m an honorary member of their department now 🤣 They were very happy to show off their stuff and are really helpful, so we can explain things in similar ways which is also helpful.

Set up another pulley situation in #mathstoday with Y12. Spent the whole lesson modelling, checking, refining the model to work out tension, acceleration, total distance travelled. I think they understand the questions better if they’ve seen it first and work through the process.
