I always use the graphs. It’s what I used when I did A-level, and it helps them practise sketching them ready for transformations and modelling. I show them CAST, but I find some label it incorrectly and it can become a hindrance.

Thank you!! We have a 2-year-old, so if you could make him understand this too, that would be great 😬

A rod suspended by two Newton Metres with masses hanging from it. A metre rule and extra masses are nearby.

In #mathstoday with Y12 we looked at suspended moments. They often struggle to visualise what these look like, so we looked at the tension in the β€˜strings’ as well as the point of tilting.

Reading β€˜The Island of Doctor Moreau’ in the glorious sunshine, I was amused to find this among the list of H G Wells’ short stories:

Fascinating read - thank you! As a maths teacher, this could provide the basis for an end-of year activity!

I suggested β€˜Parable of the Sower’ as our next read at our school Book Club (staff only). Can’t wait to hear what they think of it… Terrifyingly accurate is my thinking…

Found myself humming a catchy tune that had embedded itself in my brain today, only to realise it’s the sound of the photocopier running.

A 2kg mass on a slope supported by a lab jack. A string attaches the mass to a dangling mass via a pulley.

A 2kg mass on a slope supported by a lab jack. A string attaches the mass to a dangling mass via a pulley.

In #MathsToday we first calculated FMax by raising the slope to the point of sliding, then set up a situation with a pulley where pupils calculated the amount of mass to add to the hanging end to pull the mass up the slope (to the nearest 0.1kg). Very satisfying to see!

The films are brilliant, but I know what you mean! I think I saw the cartoon version before I read it, which only covers half the story. Even so, it did influence how I saw the characters. Still love it!

Feeling like I want to read The Lord of the Rings again… The rising of a threat in a far away land, subservient men corrupted after taking riches from an evil mastermind, rulers being cowed into taking no action against the threat, insignificant people doing what they can to resist…

Set up another pulley situation in #mathstoday with Y12. Spent the whole lesson modelling, checking, refining the model to work out tension, acceleration, total distance travelled. I think they understand the questions better if they’ve seen it first and work through the process.

In #mathstoday with L6, we looked at pulley problems. Thanks to the physics department we could create some of the problems to see how accurate the models were and discuss assumptions.
