Acute behavioural disturbances: olanzapine or haloperidol? This is the sixth in a series of blog posts on new research in emergency toxicology. In emergency medicine, we regularly encounter patients who are agitated or distressed to the point of severe distress and/or violent behaviour directed at themselves or others..

Acute behavioural disturbance (ABD) is a high-stakes presentation in emergency medicine, often requiring rapid pharmacological sedation. While haloperidol has long been a go-to antipsychotic, recent evidence suggests olanzapine may offer similar efficacy with fewer side effects.
