The gas shortage signature Ventra card is going to go so hard

To reduce driving harm, driving itself needs to be reduced both by creating a built environment conducive to other modes and by reducing the incentives for driving."
09.03.2026 15:50 β π 5 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0FYI the 1970s oil crisis was the impetus for Copenhagen turning into a cycling city
09.03.2026 11:38 β π 642 π 196 π¬ 8 π 33This is why I chafe at jokes about how high gas prices are part of the "war on cars." People won't suddenly stop driving because gas prices are high. We need to make bicycling safer, we need to make transit more accessible and efficient. We know that safe bike infrastructure entices people to bike!

A kid holds a handmade sign on cardboard that says βbikers belong hereβ
Informative sign at the meeting highlights traffic safety stats in portage park: From 2020-2024, 247 people were killed or seriously injured in crashes in portage park including 55 children and older adults. 96% of crashes involving someone walking or biking caused injury or death. Tools to improve safety include mashing speeds and increasing awareness of vulnerable road users.
People are clustered talking to one another and looking at signs in the portage park senior center.
Big turnout at the Portage Park bike network meeting! I heard lots of support, so Iβm hopeful for safer, more connected streets π²
Ran into friends from many circles, which is so nice, love the #bikechi community

New from us! Mayor Brandon Johnson endorsed us in 2023, now he is against our safety. The City of Chicago opposes HB2454, a bill that would make bicyclists intended users of all roads only on a disconnected network of streets rather than all streets.

Average new vehicles now cost $50K. We have to expand affordable bike, walk, transit networks to provide alternatives to costly driving. www.chicagotribune.com/2026/03/06/a...

Update on Ellen Steinke's preview of Friday's CMAP meeting on the future of DuSable Lake Shore Drive. 20 people delivered public comments, and 100s of written comments were submitted. Presumably most of them called for making DLSD more people-friendly.

Shoutout @lakebiglake.bsky.social
Cars regularly drive at dangerous speeds down this stretch which includes a school. The improvements on the way will make our streets safer for all users.
Thank you! Can't wait for the new bike lane and bus islands to be installed! Lot of foot traffic and a school in that area and we need drivers to slow down and keep folks safe.

Ald. Julia Ramirez (12th) provided the following statement about today's hit-and-run crash that injured a vulnerable road user at the Archer/Pershing/Rockwell. That's where there are weekly protests against a Safe Streets project.
x.com/streetsblogc...
βAfter analyzing crash data over a 13-year period in areas with separated bike lanes on city streets, researchers estimated that having a protected bike facility in a city would result in 44% fewer deaths and 50% fewer serous injuries than an average city.β
Safer for ALL.
