Separated Bike Lanes Means Safer Streets, Study Says β€” Streetsblog USA Cities that build protected lanes for cyclists end up with safer roads for people on bikesΒ and people in cars and on foot, a new studyΒ of 12 large metropolises revealed Wednesday.

β€œAfter analyzing crash data over a 13-year period in areas with separated bike lanes on city streets, researchers estimated that having a protected bike facility in a city would result in 44% fewer deaths and 50% fewer serous injuries than an average city.”

Safer for ALL.

"We can argue whether the citizen enforcement idea is good. We can argue about whether the bike lanes should be better designed. We can argue about whether there should be more loading zones. But we should not β€” we cannot β€” say the lives of pedestrians & cyclists are just the cost of doing business"

Public transit has a chance to reinvent how people connect and get around Yet many, near and far, are watching to see which actions will move a new transit authority in the most effective direction.

"If it succeeds, the overhaul will guarantee for at least a generation an asset that is a crucial economic link, delivering workers to their jobs and bringing residents and visitors to restaurants, entertainment and leisure activities."

Nation Wising Up, Seeking Alternatives to Cars | High Speed Rail Alliance Few places in the United States are readily amenable to car-free living, but we need to change that, starting now.

"This means that two-thirds of American households in urban and suburban areas are not emotionally attached to their cars. If they own cars, it’s because of a built environment and paltry transit options that force car ownership on them."

Chicago Traffic Deaths Reach A 9-Year Low, But Funding Cuts Could Threaten Progress The city recorded 100 traffic deaths last year, the lowest total since 2016. But city bond funding for the Complete Streets and Vision Zero programs are set to decrease 85 percent by 2029.

β€œIf we don’t have the [bond] money for the Complete Streets projects in the future, we’re just going to kind of resurface the road, call it a day and revisit it down the line,” Perez said. β€œIt’s a one-time opportunity to redo the street and make it safe for the coming generation.”

I'm always amazed when people say "we need to plan for the future" & what they mean is "we need to plan to have enough parking to park everyone today & all the new cars added until that future date" rather than, we need to plan for infill dev, more busses, more transit, more bikes & less cars!
