"Autonomous taxi companies claim their automated driving systems are safer than their human counterparts. However, the actual evidence is inconclusive and ultimately, we will need a lot more data before a definitive answer can be provided."

"We can argue whether the citizen enforcement idea is good. We can argue about whether the bike lanes should be better designed. We can argue about whether there should be more loading zones. But we should not โ€” we cannot โ€” say the lives of pedestrians & cyclists are just the cost of doing business"

How Illinois became the bicycling center of the nation: A Q&A with Christopher Sweet | Active Transportation Alliance Illinois lays claim to one of the great episodes in American cycling history, and historian Christopher Sweet brings that era [โ€ฆ]

โ€œChicago is the bicycle center of the United States,โ€ the Chicago Tribune confidently declared in 1896, backing up the claim with nearly a full page of bicycle-related statistics and stories. The paper estimated that Chicago had 200,000 riders, including 40,000 women and 2,000 children."

Public transit has a chance to reinvent how people connect and get around Yet many, near and far, are watching to see which actions will move a new transit authority in the most effective direction.

"If it succeeds, the overhaul will guarantee for at least a generation an asset that is a crucial economic link, delivering workers to their jobs and bringing residents and visitors to restaurants, entertainment and leisure activities."

Nation Wising Up, Seeking Alternatives to Cars | High Speed Rail Alliance Few places in the United States are readily amenable to car-free living, but we need to change that, starting now.

"This means that two-thirds of American households in urban and suburban areas are not emotionally attached to their cars. If they own cars, itโ€™s because of a built environment and paltry transit options that force car ownership on them."

Chicago Traffic Deaths Reach A 9-Year Low, But Funding Cuts Could Threaten Progress The city recorded 100 traffic deaths last year, the lowest total since 2016. But city bond funding for the Complete Streets and Vision Zero programs are set to decrease 85 percent by 2029.

โ€œIf we donโ€™t have the [bond] money for the Complete Streets projects in the future, weโ€™re just going to kind of resurface the road, call it a day and revisit it down the line,โ€ Perez said. โ€œItโ€™s a one-time opportunity to redo the street and make it safe for the coming generation.โ€

I'm always amazed when people say "we need to plan for the future" & what they mean is "we need to plan to have enough parking to park everyone today & all the new cars added until that future date" rather than, we need to plan for infill dev, more busses, more transit, more bikes & less cars!

Letters: The protected bike lanes on Archer Avenue have many supporters Of course, there are opponents of the project, but they do not represent the entirety of the neighborhood.

"A safer and more inviting Archer would encourage more trips by bike or on foot โ€” especially short trips within the neighborhood. This would ease traffic congestion, increase foot traffic for local businesses and provide more opportunities for neighbors to see each other face to face"
