This is why I chafe at jokes about how high gas prices are part of the "war on cars." People won't suddenly stop driving because gas prices are high. We need to make bicycling safer, we need to make transit more accessible and efficient. We know that safe bike infrastructure entices people to bike!

Half the line to get into the building in portage park, the other half behind me was half a block long. There’s a yard sign in the lawn at the park that says “we support portage park safe streets”

Informative sign at the meeting highlights traffic safety stats in portage park: From 2020-2024, 247 people were killed or seriously injured in crashes in portage park including 55 children and older adults. 96% of crashes involving someone walking or biking caused injury or death. Tools to improve safety include mashing speeds and increasing awareness of vulnerable road users.

Cars regularly drive at dangerous speeds down this stretch which includes a school. The improvements on the way will make our streets safer for all users.

Separated Bike Lanes Means Safer Streets, Study Says — Streetsblog USA Cities that build protected lanes for cyclists end up with safer roads for people on bikes and people in cars and on foot, a new study of 12 large metropolises revealed Wednesday.

“After analyzing crash data over a 13-year period in areas with separated bike lanes on city streets, researchers estimated that having a protected bike facility in a city would result in 44% fewer deaths and 50% fewer serous injuries than an average city.”

Portage Park Neighbors Can Weigh In On Proposed Bike Lanes At March 5 Meeting The Chicago Department of Transportation announced plans this month for the Portage Park Neighborhood Bike Network, which includes three new bike lanes and five neighborhood greenways.
