🇫🇷 France recorded the highest BEV market share among the five largest markets, reaching more than 28%.

✅ What the EU is doing: Under the EU's RED III, biofuels are phased out if a significant portion of a crop’s expansion occurs on high-carbon land such as forests or peatlands. Palm biofuel already met this benchmark; the European Commission’s proposal shows soy biofuels now do too.

Producing biofuels from palm oil and soybean oil typically requires clearing forests and other carbon-rich ecosystems to create farmland, leading to significant land-use change emissions.

Good news: The EU plans to phase out soy biofuels by 2030 🇪🇺 📣
The European Commission proposed that soy-based biofuels no longer count toward EU renewable energy targets. These biofuels would be fully phased out by 2030, and Member States would have the option to act sooner.
Without electric cars, Mercedes-Benz AG would have missed its target by 35 g/km, BMW by 23 g/km, and Volkswagen by 20 g/km.

The proposal, published in December 2025, would reduce the 2035 zero-emission target from 100% to 90% and allow averaging of emissions over 2030–2032. ICCT modelling indicates this could result in roughly 1 gigatonne of additional CO₂—around 1.4 times Germany’s annual emissions.

Daimler is leading Europe’s zero-emission #truck race with over 1,000 sales in Q1–Q3 2025, a threefold increase from the same period last year. The eActros made up 90% of sales. Overall, ZE trucks made up 5% of Mercedes’ heavy truck sales, while Renault Trucks and Volvo Trucks stood at 2.4% each.

What can we learn from EV take-up in Nordic countries? 🇩🇰🇸🇪🇫🇮
Our market spotlight zeroes in on Denmark, Sweden, and Finland, and identifies policy incentives that encourage EV uptake, such as tax breaks and benefits for businesses.

📈 Beyond the Nordics, Belgium, Ireland, and Portugal have also reached around 50% EV market share. For context, the share in these countries were 30%–40% in January.

Nordic countries continue to lead Europe’s EV market. Combined BEV and PHEV shares are above 50%.
Norway and Denmark reached a BEV market share of 98% and 74%, respectively.
👉 This is the highest share in the past two years, and a 3-percentage-point increase compared with October.
The plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) market declined slightly, down 1 percentage point from the previous month to a 10% market share.

In 2024, average CO2 emissions from new cars in Europe held steady at 107 g/km. All manufacturers met their targets, with 9/10 pools relying on #BEVs to do so.
Keeping up BEV sales despite recent regulatory changes will be key to avoiding excess CO2 emissions. ⬇️
The amendment also foresees mechanisms to offset additional tailpipe emissions through credits for low-carbon fuels and steel.
Small and affordable battery electric vehicles are incentivized through super credits.
