Born in 1711 in New York, Hammon was enslaved his entire life. But unlike most, he was educated and became a preacher and a writer.

One of his most powerful writings, An Address to the Negroes in the State of New York, urged enslaved people to seek knowledge and find strength in their faith.

Most people have heard of Phillis Wheatley, but did you know that Jupiter Hammon was actually the first Black American to have his work published? In 1760, he broke barriers with his poetry and essays—while still enslaved.
