#VesuviusDay? Pliny the Younger said 79 CE. But the day & month have been fluid. For a long time we thought 24 Aug. Discovery of a graffiti in 2018 had some scholars guessing 24 Oct. But when Mark Twain visited Pompeii in 1867 he was told 9 Nov & put it in "Innocents Abroad"!

And don't believe them when they tell you the Prison of Socrates was on Philopappos Hill... It was almost certainly in the Athenian Agora and you can still see the most likely ruins today, as any good guide book will tell you.

The recently uncovered "huge Roman jigsaw that reveals a 2000 year old fresco in London" includes an image of mistletoe which was called bird-lime and used like superglue to catch birds in ancient times. It might have had erotic associations! 🥰

My playful retelling of Virgil’s Aeneid, from the point of view of Aeneas’s friend "faithful Achates" imagined as a dog, is aimed at teen and YA readers. But if you love myths and animals, you might enjoy it, too. #MythRetelling #TrojanWar #Odyssey #Argus #Homer

I just listened to your Ancients podcast on Jason and the Argonauts yesterday. Last night, I bought the Kindle version of your book and watched the Argonauts movie. It was great! I’ve always liked Clash of the Titans, and Ray Harryhausen does amazing work with stop-motion!

The left side of a leopard carved in ivory is shown facing slightly away, with its jaws around prey in copper alloy. The leopard has spots incised into its body, and its tail is curling up around it's back right haunch.
Links of a copper alloy chain are attached to the figure where the prey is placed.

Just out! The latest in my Tales from Virgil’s Aeneid: Achates: Soul of a Hero. I have cheekily envisaged Aeneas’s sidekick “faithful Achates” as a Molossian hound. It will give readers a totally new perspective on Virgil’s masterpiece. Cover by @flaroh.bsky.social
