“Colonists”? The best historical analogy isn’t The Martian or The Expanse. It’s Roanoke Island, and that was on Earth.
Maybe 500–600 years from now, with uninterrupted investment and some revolutionary physics we can’t yet imagine.

Terraforming? Not happening. Permanent colonies? Not in any meaningful, self-sustaining sense. You’d be talking about sealed habitats dependent on continuous Earth resupply.

No magnetosphere means:
1. constant radiation exposure
2. long-term health catastrophe for settlers
3. atmospheric stripping
4. zero realistic terraforming pathway with anything like current physics

That means no real shielding from solar and cosmic radiation. Over geological time, that’s exactly why Mars lost most of its atmosphere in the first place.

Douthat is married to his Roman Catholic faith. Unfortunately his Yale education has only reinforced a particular intellectual constraint that contorts itself into embracing Augustinian and Aquinas philosophies that work to justify moral distance from The Sermon on the Mount.
