Crocodiles do have empathy. For ex., they're tender and doting parents. Watching them gives us a glimpse into what dinosaur behaviour may have been like. (Though crocodilians emerged before dinosaurs!) We mustn't create hard-and-fast rules about evolving sentient beings. We're not computers!

As you say, it's badly overused. Everyone justifies using it individually. But it adds up. Even a single exposure causes permanent, measurable damage to human and animal health.

You say that but I remember in Bluesky's earlier days there were really disturbed Trumpsters dominating a lot of discussions. Users decided not to engage, just block.

Now they're gone, you can still engage in debate & find interesting takes. But the atmosphere is a lot more peaceful & intelligent.

I was lake swimming with a friend, both us young women chatting, when a speedboat drove right at us. We waved & shouted, but the men bore down & swerved in pursuit as we swam for our lives. They laughed when we made it to shore. Bullies enjoy humiliating others-they make love to themselves that way.

ME/CFS is a devastating condition that has long been denied, dismissed, psychologised and underdiagnosed. Research is at last starting to catch up with it, with glimmers of hope for those who have been left untreated for so long.

Our brains are physical but, unless you're a rare genius, the ideas that fill them come from outside us. Even during the pre-verbal phase of infancy, how a parent handles a child- roughly, gently, attentively, neglectfully- creates physiological responses that shape personality.

Planet-heating methane is escaping from cracks in the #Antarctic seabed as the region warms, with new seeps being discovered at an "astonishing rate", scientists find, raising fears that future global warming predictions may have been underestimated.

Mitigation efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and meet the Paris Agreement have been offset by economic growth - Communications Earth & Environment Global carbon dioxide intensity declined from 2015 to 2024 following the Paris Agreement, but total emissions still increased due to economic growth, according to a global analysis of population, gros...

Good news: carbon intensity has declined

Bad news: carbon emissions increased, due to the rapid rise in world GDP

Also bad news: the chance of staying below 2Β°C remained low, at 17%

Better news: chance of going above 3Β°C has gone down substantially, from 26% to 9%

Kew is also an important center for research on biodiversity & climate change in the UK. The scientists there were commenting on UK trees. Anyway, I give up; I'm exhausted!
To sum up: Many native plants in the UK are at risk. We need to plant better adapted varieties. (This is how we saved the elm!)

The beech in times of climate change Frequent extreme events such as hot summers and dry periods lead to a reassessment of prognoses for the future of beech in central Europe.

"Climate-adapted silviculture with diverse, drought-adapted tree species and an increase in structural diversity through different age classes can slow down the climate change-related displacement of the beech" (albeit in the short term given the pace of CC).

I keep saying I basically agree with you. But the current extinction event upends the previous geological epoch.

We're already too late, so we need to focus now on mitigation and adaptation.

Thanks for engaging with me.

I'm amazed you've ignored everything I've said about the larger issues which also incorporate ecological evidence. I want the same end as everyone else on this thread. But it's not achieved just by swapping plants. The cause-effect loop is more complicated than just identifying "baddies" to kill.

For example, Himalayan balsam.

The invasives are often successful because they're suited to the new soil ph (caused by industrial pollutants), new climactic conditions and different soil structure due to loss of invertebrates.

For example, nettles might be a good intermediary, as they remove heavy metals.

18.10.2025 11:50 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Agreed, though the reverse is also true. When years of industrial pollutants & climate change have altered the soil's chemistry the growing season & pollinator behaviour, ecosystem restoration requires more incremental interventions than swapping the better adapted plants for the traditional ones.

Yes, but from what I have read, using pesticides to kill off invasives likewise harms the long-term health of the soil and the reproductive health of invertebrates.

Bluefin tuna are miraculously returning to UK shores – only to be tormented for β€˜sport’ | George Monbiot A tournament in Cornwall will pit anglers against these magnificent creatures, as part of a rising trend for so-called β€˜sportfishing’, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

- fox hunting
- Reform UK
- antagonism to asylum seekers.
In other words, the same few antisocial (psychopathic?) men, turning up in all the bad places.
