Two side-by-side galaxies fill the image. The left galaxy is a bright spiral galaxy bursting with blue star clusters, crossed by dark brown dust lanes. The right galaxy is a lenticular galaxy. It bright yellow-ish white center that gradually becomes more transparent, emitting a hazy glow. Distant stars and galaxies dot the background.

The dolphin nebula is a teal blue bubble nebula. It has a beak-like section off to one side, resembling a semi-profile view of a dolphin. The majority of the bubble is teal but there are redish-white accents throughout.

I also managed to find some time to process the Dolphin (SH2-308) today. I'm super happy with the detail I was able to get in the Oiii (blue/teal). I'm really shocked at how little HA (red) came through. I think I'd have to go really deep on it to pull the HA out.

A grainy, black and white image of a face-on spiral galaxy. The faint galaxy has two loose spiral arms that emerge from the ring and wind counterclockwise around the galaxy. The arms are crossed by dark dust lanes and appears blotchy with bright star clusters. At the top left edge of the galaxy is a barely noticeable smaller elliptical galaxy, seen as a bright dot surrounded by an oval-shaped haze. A few white dots, which are stars, are seen on the black background.

Image of Arp 200, also known as NGC 1134, from Halton Arp's Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies (1966).

In the original catalog it was in the category: Amorphous galaxies - Material ejected from nuclei. It is likely interacting with a small companion.

A three panel image. On the left is the NuStar image, in the center is the Hubble image, and in the middle is an image where the two are overlaid.
In the left panel is a blurry, abstract image with blobs of white, pink, blue and yellow colors. The brightest area is a white blob to the lower right.
In the center panel two merging galaxies form an abstract shape, which looks a little like an upside down rubber duck. Within the "head" and "body" of the duck are crossed brown swirls, which are dust and gas. The outside of the duck is outlined with hazy yellow swirls, which are streams of stars. Near the "neck" of the duck, at the point where the two merging galaxies touch, and slightly to the right is a bright white blob, surrounded by pink blobs. This is X-ray light from NuStar, which shows emission from an active supermassive black hole in the right galaxy.

The brightest x-ray object in this scene is an unknown object at the upper left. The next brightest thing seems to be a distant active galaxy nucleus (AGN) coincidentally positioned just above the nebula. In third place comes NGC 604 itself. It's hard to compete with an AGN, but these young stars are doing an admirable job. X-rays are generated when things get super hot, and that's what's happening within the cavernous interior bubble of the nebula.

There's a better explanation and additional imagery at Chandra's website here: chandra.harvard.edu/photo/2009/n604/

This image was possible thanks to data from the following Chandra proposal:
