Guys, it's so fun to write without EVER HAVING TO USE AI.

Words are awesome. Sentences, too!

Because, unfortunately, everyone keeps showing up for every show he makes no matter what. If the parents of the victims were saying "this is a bad show" and it didn't stop audiences... Nothing will.

Oh my, Australia is actually getting a release of this (at least at the moment), sure it's a month later, But I'll take it.

I didn't really click with it, but the car crash sequence absolutely knocked my socks off, lots of little things to really love.

If you're going to a film fest–definitely watch the films that don't have distro yet. It may be the only chance to see a film in that specific cut.

I react very poorly to life-coach-style-pithy-sayings, I want pragmatic shit. Is cold calling/query email still doable? Is the blacklist the only thing anyone looks at now? Are there any managers or producers who are actually looking for new talent *in earnest* not just saying they do.

I don't think this *terribly vague* advice is malicious and gatekeepy, but rather that honest advice doesn't really do well on social media, pseudo-inspiration serves the algorithm better, gets likes etc, and so people assume that's the best advice to give.

"Just write your spec"

"okay, done, now what?"

"Just write your spec"

"Okay, I have 22 specs now, sitting on the table, nothing's happened"

Every viral screenwriting advice video: "Write something commercial, that an movie star will want to do and then you'll sell"

Which is a little like saying "Buy sugar, and then you'll have a cake" like sure those steps are part of the process but, arguably, you left out the MOST IMPORTANT part.

Legitimately one of the best studio films of the last 20 years.

Fuuuuuck, I might be due for a re-watch.

Next time you pay too much for a ticket, you have both Obama (allowed this shit in the first place) and Trump (who could have let this go to trial) to thank.

Remember... it is wealth that divides us more than anything, and wealth defends wealth.

One of the most destructive blind spots to the guys currently tanking our society is that they treat information like vitamins and believe it can be optimized.

1. They’re lying/wrong

2. It means the world is run by guys who think they have nothing to learn from a movie or song or play or stranger

I'm so fucking angry that we threw gasoline onto an already burning planet for the sake of having dumb empty ugly plasticky videos of vegetables yelling at each other.

Friendly reminder that, racism aside for a moment, even the claims that DW Griffith was technically innovative are absolute horseshit.

LOIS WEBER and ALICE GUY-BLACHÉ before her did almost everything Griffith is credited with inventing (And More!).

Even funnier is the animators replaced basically everything he did on the mocap stage because absolutely ZERO human physiology maps onto dragon physiology in any way shape or form, not even the way the mouth moves.

Mainstream America: We are obsessed with Heated Rivalry and Drag Race. We love them and can't get enough.
American Democrat politicians: LGBT people are not culturally normal. We will not speak of them.

Cynthia Rothrock in a film still from YES MADAM. She clutches a staff with her right hand while reaching out with her left.

In honor of her birthday, I've been thinking about the absolute cult icon that is Cynthia Rothrock. One of the coolest action stars to ever to do the damn thing, she's had an enviable international career in cinema. If you prefer high-octane idol worship, her oeuvre is the movie marathon you need.

Happy Anniversary to a perfect movie that continues to be a source of joy for me. Every time I learn about these stories I understand why it’s so

It was going on one, two in the morning, and we were shooting what I felt was an important scene for me, when he makes an attempt to be quote-unquote straight, in a suit, and at the end of it he gets emotional and locks himself in the other room. And I felt like, I’m not getting what I wantβ€”I’m not happy with it. Mike was happy with it. He called me the next day and said, β€œI know you weren’t happy with the scene last night. Believe me, we wouldn’t have gone home if I had felt we weren’t getting it.” And then he sort of became my psychiatrist and said, β€œYou find it difficult to be happy, don’t you? You find it difficult to enjoy things.” And I said, β€œWell, sometimes. Last night was about feeling too tired and not feeling I was reaching what I needed to reach for the scene.” He talked to me then about when he was making, I don’t know whether it was Virginia Woolf or The Graduate. He said, β€œI didn’t enjoy it for a second. I was worried about so many things.” And then he said, β€œYou know, this is never going to happen again quite this way. You should try to allow yourself to enjoy this more. Take a minute a day, and then add a minute the next day, and another minute. Pretty soon, you’ll have hours of happiness.”

The Birdcage opened thirty years ago today, so in its honor, I want to share one of my favorite stories about Mike Nichols that didn't make it into my biography. This is from an interview I did with Nathan Lane.

The correct response when someone tells you this is:
"Okay, maybe try reading them when you grow up."

I'm reminded of the hundreds of movies and TV shows that were deleted for a tax break, and so they are gone forever, not coming back in some disney vault situation, they're literally justgone from existence unless you have a pirated copy you got when they aired...

Academically, is there a way to ensure they don't become dead practices (through like new generations disinterest etc) or is that part of the idea is if they die out cause they're not passed down orally, thats meant to be etc?

08.03.2026 22:53 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Oh this is so fascinating thank you for this. I would have assumed deliberately fictionalising would have been seen as insensitive at best, the way, for example, "aztec gods something something" has often been used in horror movies and come across as bordering on racist.
