Second viewing of A Different Man last night. Fucking love this movie.

Dale Cooper might be my favourite fictional character.

I will never forget watching Eraserhead while my wife was pregnant and finally getting it.

The Deer Lady monologue in The Straight Story still haunts me.

The Return might be the best final statement from any filmmaker.

One of the scariest filmmakers of all time and one of the funniest. One of the best advocates for the basic decency of humanity and one of the best chroniclers of its capacity for depravity.

To be able to put such a pure encapsulation of what was in his head onscreen, seemingly without any consideration of ‘the audience’ is a miracle. To do that and still have it connect with so many people on such a personal level seems impossible. And yet he did it every time.

I always liked David Lynch’s work, but it wasn’t until I started trying to make my own films that I understood how truly special he was.

This was a very fun and thoughtful interview until with about 3 minutes left I answer a question by saying I am ‘pro-history’ and that history is ‘important stuff’, which makes me sound like an absolute moron who has never read a history book.
