I'd go far as to say that speculation is a type of gambling.

Seems like the better method is your LGS letting you buy individual cards.

The fact that a second hand market is being used to determine that things are valuable, and that purchasing them on speculation is bad (but only for children) misses the mark of why gambling is bad.
