The World Below is an alternate Earth populated by anthropomorphic mythical creatures. The starting population of every species appears all at once, each species born from one of nine Sins. The supernatural has long been observed, but only recently understood. Although hydras are concentrated mainly in Greece, with the primary exception of immigrant blocs in the United States, their power is world famous. When a hydra is killed, two copies spontaneously appear nearby, or as near as possible. Their cause of death, no matter how severe, is cured utterly. The two hydra copies are perfect replicas of the original at the instant of their death, complete with a disorienting sense of continuity. If the original was fertile to start with, only one of the two retains the ability to reproduce. All hydrae can be spared from death in this way once. For some, it happens twice. For a rare few, death may be evaded three times, for a total of eight copies. Three is the observed limit, though tales have always existed of hydras who have split four or more times. Hydrae are born from Folly, a Sin associated with impulsiveness. Sin represents a predisposition to a worldview, not a fundamental nature. It is up to each individual the actions their worldview causes them to take, or if indeed they fall into that worldview at all. Where dragons see the most value in the influence they personally have, and sirens are most concerned with the impressions they make, the key motivator of a typical hydra is their place in history. Hydras are all but guaranteed the most legacy over other species, and they are driven to make the very most of it.

All hydras have four names: a first name, two middle names, and a family name. Like most, they go by their first name, with the family name representing an affiliation. Their two middle names are the names that will go to their clones. Traditionally, the second name goes to the clone standing more to the north at the moment of their creation, with the third name going to the clone to the south. A hydra splitting can be a messy affair, with possessions both consider rightfully theirs under dispute. Through this system, both can at least agree on what to call the other. Each hydra is soon tasked with coming up with two more names, to pass on to potential clones of their own. One of the most striking features of a hydra is their "crown" - an anatomical horn, consisting of bone fused to the skull and a keratin sheath. The five spikes of a crown are gender dimorphic, with a male crown longest in the center, and a female's longest on the sides. A hydra's horn grows through puberty and then stops. For most of history, a broken horn was a done deal, though modern endocrinology makes horn regrowth trivial. Similarly, transgender hydrae have an easy time transitioning from one crown to the other. Regular HRT stimulates the growth of the desired spike(s) and frill(s), and causes the unwanted frill(s) to absorb back into the body. From there, removing the unwanted spike(s) is a safe and inexpensive procedure. The tongue of a hydra is very sensitive, with the greatest taste buds density of all myths. The shape of their long tongue mirrors the shape at the end of their tail.

Though they are often recognized as reptile-like, a set of gills filtering between their ribs allows them to repurpose their diaphragm. Instead of filling lungs with air, relaxation of the diaphragm draws water through the gills, then contraction forces it back out. Hydrae are best adapted to breathing salt water. Breathing fresh water will gradually cause electrolyte deficiency over the course of several hours to a few days. Like fire salamanders, hydrae possess retractable webbing between their fingers. A long tendon hoists the membranes like a curtain, allowing for both full use of their hands and enhanced speed in the water. During the Greek dry season, a hydra’s frills become brightly colored, with patterns unique to the individual. During the rainy season, colors become more muted. Even in other parts of the world with differing or inverted seasons, the frills remain synchronized with the seasons of Greece. Some hydras opt to use scale paint to cover up the bright colors of their frills, either temporarily or for the entire season. This paint is commonly used year-round on the eyelash-like frills around the eyes.

I knew a hydra kid when I was in school in Alaska. We weren't friends, but his dads chaperoned a lot of school events and they were sick as fuck. Oh - they weren't gay, the original just died on a construction site in the 90s.
