I think this is specifically and very seriously wrong. The reforms following each of these crises were inadequate, and diminished progressively by the failure to adequately address the previous crisis. That curve continues to Trump, who was convicted of dozens of felonies and then reelected.

Came here to recommend this. An unusual read, but I've spent a lot of time thinking about it. There's a lot of fascinating...I dunno, Eldritch horror in space? that's kind of just part of the world building, and yet the book really isn't _about_ that somehow.
