Cedar and Rowan have joined the Exhibit Pack! More details to come in our upcoming Exhibit Pack Update video on YouTube. The pack is doing great with the pups. Introducing new pups is not a one-day process; it can take weeks or even months before they are fully integrated into the pack.

On June 27, 1985, 11 men and women, at the request of Dr. L. David Mech, formed the "Committee for an International Wolf Center" to establish a permanent home for the "Wolves and Humans" exhibit in Ely, MN. Over 40+ years, the Center is committed to promoting science-based education about wolves.

Rieka, the dominant female, has been regurgitating food for the pups. You might wonder why she does this. The answer lies in a hormone called prolactin, often referred to as the nurturing hormone. When an adult wolf regurgitates food for the pups, it serves as a way to feed and care for them.

Rowan is a more relaxed and calm pup. He tends to take anything new in his environment in stride with little anxiety. When the adult wolves join in a chorus howl, he has been seen responding since he was 14 days old.

Milk teeth of wolf pup

In wolf pups, the milk incisors are the small, sharp teeth in both the upper and lower jaws at the front of the mouth. These teeth are known as "baby teeth" or deciduous teeth, which are eventually replaced by adult teeth as the pup matures.

Ely, Minnesota, experienced a snowy winter that left a heavy snowpack and ice in the exhibit enclosure. As spring approached, the melting snow began to create vernal poolsβ€”temporary bodies of water that form in mid to late spring as the temperatures rise and the ground begins to thaw.

Wolves are opportunistic carnivores, primarily eating meat based on location and season. In the Arctic, they hunt caribou and musk oxen in winter and snowshoe hare in summer. In Minnesota, they mainly eat whitetail deer and moose in winter, and beaver and snowshoe hare in summer.

Whelping season is approaching, and preparation is crucial. A key part of this is denning. Wolves need specific den requirements to ensure a safe space for their pups. To provide a secure environment for the pups, it's important to select locations that are distant from neighboring packs and humans.

The Return of the Dire Wolf Colossal Biosciences has genetically engineered the first dire wolf to live in over 10,000 years. Here's what that means for other extinct species.

The dire wolf once roamed from Canada to Venezuela but became extinct over 10,000 years ago. Numerous remains have been found across the Americas, leading to an opportunity for a company called Colossal Biosciences to explore the potential of reviving this ancient species. time.com/7274542/colo...

Various animals have unique grooming behaviors for cleanliness. Wolves nibble at their fur to remove debris, lick specific areas, and wipe their faces on the ground or in snow. Mutual grooming strengthens social bonds within the pack, which is crucial for these social carnivores.
