On June 27, 1985, 11 men and women, at the request of Dr. L. David Mech, formed the "Committee for an International Wolf Center" to establish a permanent home for the "Wolves and Humans" exhibit in Ely, MN. Over 40+ years, the Center is committed to promoting science-based education about wolves.

How to ID the pups: Cedar has more silver guard hairs on his back and face and a narrower muzzle, while Rowan has a broader muzzle and fewer silver hairs. Personality traits: Rowan is laid-back and more dominant, whereas Cedar tends to be anxious in new situations. Pups are 22 lbs. at 2months old.

We are often asked how to tell Blackstone and Caz apart. Our wolf care team created this graphic so you can identify them while watching the cams.

Rieka, the dominant female, has been regurgitating food for the pups. You might wonder why she does this. The answer lies in a hormone called prolactin, often referred to as the nurturing hormone. When an adult wolf regurgitates food for the pups, it serves as a way to feed and care for them.

Rowan is a more relaxed and calm pup. He tends to take anything new in his environment in stride with little anxiety. When the adult wolves join in a chorus howl, he has been seen responding since he was 14 days old.

Ely, Minnesota, experienced a snowy winter that left a heavy snowpack and ice in the exhibit enclosure. As spring approached, the melting snow began to create vernal pools—temporary bodies of water that form in mid to late spring as the temperatures rise and the ground begins to thaw.

Ambassador Wolf Blackstone is eating chicken.

Wolves are opportunistic carnivores, primarily eating meat based on location and season. In the Arctic, they hunt caribou and musk oxen in winter and snowshoe hare in summer. In Minnesota, they mainly eat whitetail deer and moose in winter, and beaver and snowshoe hare in summer.
