as far as i understand, that view comes out of a synthesis of textual evidence and evidence of where the sculptures were found (which hints at the function they served in the social life of the original viewers)

it's clear from the scholarship that the artists who created these sculptures, and the people who viewed them in their original context, did not have a very positive view of intersex people (to say nothing of trans people). my interest comes from wanting to repurpose and renarrativize their imagery
