This is one of those times when I remember that those of us who see nuance and detail have a much bigger struggle, trying to coalesce on a stance that everyone is happy with, versus those who just scream "BAN THE FILTH" 🫠

I can understand that reluctance. I think people in the romance world have had a loooong experience with being dismissed as something frivolous or unimportant; I could certainly see some being wary of inviting definitions that might exacerbate that.

This is a really good question. I guess I see it as a spectrum much like being queer generally, where some members of that group are more at risk than others? And so it's on those who have more stability to do their best to help those with less? I'm probably not phrasing that well, though.

Anyway. I'm not entirely sure I have a conclusion, bar knowing that Ro is correct and that - when we're (rightly) discussing things like who gets to tell whose story - people who would ban honest representation of sexuality and love in all its forms won't see such nuance. We're all in this together.

Yet I know full well that people wanting to ban or censor the smut I write won't then look at my stories about men falling in love and having sex and say "oh, well, this is *art* not like that other filth" and move on! Regardless of how I (inadvertently) partition genres in my own head.

I suspect the majority of that 'obligation' is my own hangup about what it means to be a 'real' romance writer. Especially one who started out writing erotica, and who's aware that the audience for that (traditionally) isn't necessarily the same as the audience (traditionally) for m/m romance.

I read this last night and have been thinking about it ever since, because even as someone who eagerly writes on a spectrum from queer romance to unadulterated filth (and loves - and is proud of! - it all) I've still found myself feeling obliged to 'justify' the explicitness in my romance stories.

Ten years ago on December 14th I posted "Dolph," after a conversation among some queer friends and fellow authors about "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," and it started a tradition of re-telling holiday stories through a queer lens that’s been going for a decade now.
