mRNA vaccines are one of the most important tools we have for preventing future catastrophic pandemics because we can update them more quickly than any other vaccine technology in response to new emerging viruses & variants.

RFK Jr cancelling millions in mRNA research makes the world far less safe.

Solar panels, heat pumps, and batteries smash installation records Latest figures from Microgeneration Certification Scheme reveal market for small scale renewables soared 37 per cent during the first half of the year to 170,000 installations

Some actual good news to counter *gestures at everything*. Solar panel, heat pump, and battery installations in the UK are absolutely flying. Clean technologies are cutting bills, improving energy security, and tackling climate change. www.businessgreen.com/news/4517344...

'Disclosure dividend': Study shows how acting on climate data can deliver up to $21 for every $1 invested New CDP report details how companies that accurately report on their carbon emissions can unlock significant financial benefits

It would be a good investment to act on climate even if it were financially burdensome. Given that doing so can deliver $21 for every $1 invested, it is pure folly not to press ahead.

Unless you're a petrostate or a fossil fuel company. In which case, populist politicians are your last bastion.

A chart from https://docs.nrel.gov/docs/fy25osti/95135.pdf , sourced to the IEA as of April 2025, showing solar power as % of generation in different countries. This varies between over 25% for the Netherlands, through about 24% for Spain, about 14% EU average, about 8% for the US to almost nothing in Norway. Text says that the IEA reckons global is about 10%.

I do bloody love this chart. Who'd have thought, 20 years ago, that solar would be ~10% of world electricity generation by 2024 - and over 20% in some countries, rising rapidly in others?

Definitely not me. When I started this job I hoped to be part of a solution for maybe 1% of global electricity.

The best hope there is that the diminishing profits from running fossil fuel infrastructure - notably filling stations - makes businesses withdraw. And that the lower cost of new and used EVs (both to purchase and to run) makes even the refuseniks join the new MO. As smartphones have taken over.
