Just learning that John Candy was born on October 31st, which technically would make him Halloween Candy...and that brings me joy.

Right, I think that is the main problem. Yes it's possible to create a civilization that works for everyone, and it wouldn't even be that hard. But we have delivered ourselves over to people who desire only a civilization that serves them.

The problem is not that we don't all want the same things. The problem is we only want them for ourselves.

Also, perhaps the largest obstacle to a functional civilization is that most people of all political or religious persuasions want the 10 items on the list for themselves but don't care if others get them, an even actively work to withhold some items from others.

Just remember that the Inquisition tortured confessions out of the innocent with the "good intention" of saving their souls. They defined benevolence differently but still valued benevolence. F'd up expressions of values does not mean they are not valued.

That's true. But barring that, as humans are demonstrably bad at just leaving each other alone, the question is worth deeper exploration.

I just finished the audiobook last week and it's fantastic.

The book is incredible. Easily one of the scariest books I've read in a long time.

But to all my weirdos out there - y'all need to check this out - I think you'll see a lot of influence in here you'll appreciate

If you like poetic sci fi that is transportive, strange & totally unique, read Acid Taste by French author Emilie Galindo.
