Simone Weil: Attention, taken to its highest degree, is the same thing as prayer. It presupposes faith and love. Absolutely unmixed attention is prayer.
I say it again: we make things holy by the kind of attention we give them. In a time when we begging for a new story, it may be the stories we need are supporting us right now, if only we would lower our gaze.

The essay is addressing human society, which may be irrelevant to the earth and the universe. Probably on the level of the human species too, in that in the worst society imaginable we would likely still breed. But harmony doesn't have to matter to anyone/anything beyond us to legit matter to us.

31.10.2025 17:14 โ ๐ 669 ๐ 111 ๐ฌ 9 ๐ 6Right, I think that is the main problem. Yes it's possible to create a civilization that works for everyone, and it wouldn't even be that hard. But we have delivered ourselves over to people who desire only a civilization that serves them.
31.10.2025 15:46 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0The problem is not that we don't all want the same things. The problem is we only want them for ourselves.
31.10.2025 15:28 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Also, perhaps the largest obstacle to a functional civilization is that most people of all political or religious persuasions want the 10 items on the list for themselves but don't care if others get them, an even actively work to withhold some items from others.
31.10.2025 15:28 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Just remember that the Inquisition tortured confessions out of the innocent with the "good intention" of saving their souls. They defined benevolence differently but still valued benevolence. F'd up expressions of values does not mean they are not valued.
31.10.2025 14:10 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0That's true. But barring that, as humans are demonstrably bad at just leaving each other alone, the question is worth deeper exploration.

We cannot imagine that there might be more to us as individuals, more to Humanity as a species, and way more to the earth and the universe than meets the eye. But to survive (and thrive), thatโs exactly what we have to do.
