It's hard to overstate how much healthier and robust EVERY industry would be if the majority of businesses just aimed to be profitable ongoing concerns, as opposed to MAGICAL PERMANENT GROWTH MACHINES whose only purpose is to fuel irrational "shareholder value" targets.

On the one hand, this is terrifying.

Anywho, I figured I'd ask in case someone might know of services that are kind of like estate sale agents, but with less of an "everything must go immediately" vibe.

I don't want to deal with ebay resellers who (as I understand it) will not usually accept large, diverse inventories. If I was just looking to sell off obvious, high-value stuff, I would handle that myself.

Time isn't really an issue, so I can afford to be kind of fussy in that regard.

Have you ever downsized in a major way? Like... "I've got a couple of storage units of stuff that needs selling"-level of downsizing?

My motivation comes from having to navigate OTHER people's lifetime accumulations of "stuff" & not wanting to inflict that on my loved ones some day.

We didn't really explain what had happened at the time because it was... ya know... somewhat MORTIFYING, but the vague and seemingly miraculous update became known as "The Jesus Patch".

And what did they find? An ancient debug command that FORCED a simulated dial-up connection was still in place, uncommented and active on Live servers.

This was quickly fixed and had the knock-on benefit of DRAMATICALLY improving performance for DAoC - nearly a decade after it launched.

WAR was built off of a heavily modified version of the DAoC codebase and it wasn't until after launch that an engineer had the breathing room to really dive into the legacy network code the game was using, mainly to try and improve performance in large-scale RvR/PvP.

Supporting dial-up users was very much still A Thing for us in the late '00s. So much so that we had debug commands in place to allow engineers to easily simulate shitty connections. In fact, we had a LOT of them and not everyone knew about every set that existed.

As for the always-on stuff, I blissfully escaped that whooooole window of arguments at the time because I was making MMOs.

And let me tell you - when your business model REQUIRES someone with a shit connection Idaho being able to play - then by god your game will make it work.
