1967 was an unbelievable year for Aretha Franklin. Respect was just one of 5 US hits, each going gold. As did albums I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You and Aretha Arrives. And her great album Lady Soul, only just missed the count with a Jan 1968 release.

As the US National Archive publish 6,000 docs on 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King, remember Nina Simone’s deeply personal response to the killing, Why? (The King Of Love Is Dead). Recorded live within 48 hours of the shooting, as America burned.

The brilliance of Love’s Forever Changes hides its stormy creation. Producer Neil Young quit. Replacement Bruce Botnick saw that only Arthur Lee was studio-ready so replaced the rest of the band with sessioneers. Teary pleas let the group cut the last songs.

To Frankophiles on their sun loungers - make it a double! While listening to Sinatra At The Sands (with Basie & band, conducted by Quincy Jones) read probably the best piece ever on the Chairman of the Board - Frank Sinatra Has A Cold by Gay Talese. Ring-a-ding-ding!

Marianne Faithfull’s brilliant, harrowing version of Sister Morphine still carries an aura of doom. The loss of a child weeks before the recording as well as her addiction add a further, eerie layer to it.

When Bush Doctor by former Wailer Peter Tosh was released in ‘78 it featured a scratch ‘n’ sniff sticker on the cover. Believing the smell was ganja, some shops returned the album in disgust. Neville Garrick, Bob Marley’s designer, was behind the wheeze.

“Hateful, repugnant & a waste of money”. Ahead of the game, as always, Frank Zappa starts his own social media backlash for the new Mothers of Invention album, Absolutely Free (1967).
