As India responded to international demand for IT workers, more people acquired skills than emigrated-- raising the number of people with those skills at home.
👀 Smaller, lower-income countries often rue the loss of high-skilled workers who emigrate for greater opportunities, but PSC's @deanyang.bsky.social @umfordschool.bsky.social et al find this out-migration often comes with positive feedback loops for countries of origin. myumi.ch/rAwer #EconSky

Inside the AI Prompts DOGE Used to “Munch” Contracts Related to Veterans’ Health

I learned so much talking to ProPublica for this story. It's a telling window into how Trump/DOGE are using AI to shrink the government and the consequences. And even though this use is particularly ham-handed, it's a good example of the limitations of the technology more generally.🧵 @propublica.org

When I was at @umfordschool.bsky.social for my Master (also where @justinwolfers.bsky.social teaches), it felt like about half the students were international. Not only was it great for international students and US students both, but it clearly was great for US policy, economy and influence too.

Highly educated citizens from low-income and small countries often emigrate to seek opportunities elsewhere. @catiabatista.bsky.social, PSC's @deanyang.bsky.social et al review evidence supporting that, along with "brain drain" effects, indirect “brain gain” effects also benefit origin countries.
