In 2015 water withdrawal for cooling the UE energy system+ extraction of fossil fuels was 74 bln m3 - 53 bln m3 for power plants cooling. The biggest share was due to nuclear power plants cooling needs (30,6 bln m3) while gas and coal power plant jointly withdrew 20,80 bln m3 (Medarac i in. 2018).

As the EU prepares to extend its carbon market to transport and heating (ETS2) in 2027, concerns are rising: if EU countries have not reduced emissions by then, prices could be high.

The fear of higher prices is real — but delays aren’t the answer. Direct payments are an easy and effective fix.

We believe direct payments from ETS2 carbon revenues are a smart choice:

1️⃣ Highly transparent - citizens can see it
2️⃣ Reach most people affected - benefitting both low- and middle- income households
3️⃣ Automatically respond to high prices
4️⃣ Advance social equity where other tools fall short

This is one of those measures that by ensuring benefits for every citizens also allows to build support for continued efforts to speed up a transition to a socially just climate neutrality. Part of government revenue from taxing the biggest companies and the richest can be recycled accordingly...

I remember @greenpeace.eu #MoneyforChange campaign pushing the ECB to get rid of fossil fuel companies including Carbon Majors such as #TotalEnergies or #ENI... I also wonder if the Polish Central Bank #NBP has any policies supporting as opposed to undermining the clean energy transition?!
