Thank you Kit Marie for the invite and thank you for the chat! I really enjoyed the topics we discussed and the questions people asked!

This is disgusting, and dehumanizing, and unfortunately coming to damn near every platform you can think of. Multilingualism isn’t an inconvenience to be β€œsolved” by technology. We have to push back.

A ELF
CHARLOTTE GEATER
elf diaries
I.
long ago in the kingdoms of elfin
sitting down to dinner with one piece of bread crumbling & an old green leaf i still had my baby name then i soothed burnt herbs under my tongue
i can't remember their faces just that everything receded
i can go for years without drawing in like a bowstring / one breath

out and other in before i speak of nights in baldur's gate cruising
beneath birds who curse me back and bring me scraps of peaceable lies
for white hairs and mice
meat intact but cold for lack of blood.
it is hard to remember a time when i fell anything other than this winter asleep
caught in my eyelashes like a snowflake unmolten.
3.
if once long ago spoken aloud a different. this one spell stitched into my locket.
breaking into cellars and cupboards. the taste of scorched wine
passes through me as an astral cloud as i pass through old streets
reading on parchment what i do not remember learning. what was it for

when i was a different matter of being. the same shape but in a different place.
4.
the words are long gone and will not return but a melody from two centuries ago
under the moon plucked from our night dark lakes & pinned up in the sky.
sings to me when i fall
not asleep, but the sleep of the dead.
i crook myself in the darling arm i have claimed, bitten tenderly
and in a hundred years i will still be.
not much remains. i have faith that
the same feet will walk
silver and dainty but bitten all over by fleas. to find nothing there but
lead and vapour. dried in coastal mud.

my copy of Ragged Band of Travellers: writing from the threshold of dungeons & dragons is here!

I have a poem in this one about that mysterious figure, a fantasy of long, long life twice over β€” an elfin vampire.

My own ideas around this topic are shaped by my personal experiences with colonial history, settle in for a bit of story time if you want to follow along this tale of three parts.

"Begs the question" to mean "prompts/suggests the question" rather than "is circular" makes me a little sad - I think the less literal meaning is pretty useful. Always cool to see how meanings drift, though

The thing is: β€œremigration” is already happening. Far from the comments sections underneath pieces of writing like these, where people exchange anguished or angry words about the future of Germany and the country’s soul, people are already leaving. Foreigners out, cry the protesters, and in some sense they are getting their wish. Every few weeks, I go to check in on a friend or acquaintance and find that they are either in the process of packing their bags or they are gone, gone, gone. In general the white ones are staying in Europe and the non-white ones are putting an entire ocean between themselves and here. Germany’s problem isn’t the loud migrants like me. It’s the ones who right now are leaving silently, never to return.

Last week I checked in on a friend, someone who I thought would be one of the very last immigrants (who have any other options) to leave Germany, only to find that they and their family are already in the process of leaving. Their explicit reason: the rise of fascism. Very, very disturbing times.

has anyone written about the process of conversational repair in analog games? specifically thinking about stuff like:
- "i move my meeple 5 spaces" "i think it's 6 spaces"
- "oh, last turn i should've given you an extra 3 tokens. do you want them now?"
- "it's too late now, but for next time..."

It sounds stupid, but my family and I are all big BBC radio listeners, and it's been surprisingly hard to get used to it just not being there! Nothing's on demand, surprisingly few podcasts, no Proms etc... Even a VPN doesn't really work because they quickly work out which IP addresses to block
