The resentment that Republicans have is nothing like the resentment that white liberals had that the CRA and VRA made them not only the party of civil rights but the party of Black voters. The anger at the Black base since 2008 has emerged from all parts of the coalition, including leadership.

Many elected officials of both parties (incorrectly) view pre-VRA government as a legitimate reflection of the People. That Jim Crow meant a fascist state for Black people is somehow separate from democracy for white people. It’s why only white voters carry legitimacy. Democracy *is* whiteness.
