and realised I literally used to own it. Thrifted it in London, gave it away before moving because I couldn’t ship everything. Wild to see it again in Aug 2025. Guess it’s time I actually read it.

Was sorting through my old "1935 Government of India Act" bookmarks folder from 2017–18 and moving the good stuff/making a note to/on Zotero. Came across a book I had saved on Google Books in that folder…

If you’ve seen more works by روحانی. please DM me!These paintings deserve love. They’re poetic, decadent, romantic, and deeply tied to the Indo-Persian cultural continuum. One of the most beautiful accidental art stories I’ve ever come across.

From what I’ve pieced together:
- Rūḥānī worked in India, likely Delhi or Lucknow
- His pieces date to the mid–late 20th century
- Marketed to collectors of Persianate revival art
- Sold via reputable auctions like Everard and Caza Sikes
- Signature always in Arabic script: روحانی

Same pastel palette. Same themes. Same signature. More matches popped up on Caza Sikes Auction, Jerusalem Gallery Listing and Invaluable Lot.

This isn’t anonymous work—it’s part of a known body by an identified (if still mysterious) artist whose paintings are circulating globally.

His work echoes Mughal + Safavid traditions. Think saqis (cupbearers), lovers, musicians, and birds of longing. Painted in gouache and ink on paper.

I found a direct artist match on a MutualArt Listing. A lot of 9 paintings, all signed روحانی, attributed to the Indian miniature painting revival.

Each piece is signed in Arabic script:
روحانی — transliterated Rūḥānī
Meaning: spiritual, mystic

Turns out “Rūḥānī” was a 20th-century artist working in the Indo-Persian revivalist miniature style.

I have some guesses about the artist, the signature, and the provenance. The style is clearly Persianate: romantic figures under cherry blossoms, wine scenes, and poetic gestures. But something felt Indian too: the clothing, colours, and flourishes had post-Mughal vibes.

I was gifted 10 gorgeous miniature paintings by my local ABAA antiquarian bookseller, Alcuin Books, in Scottsdale. They’d had them for years with no clue of origin. I'm a trained historian (not an art historian), and after a deep dive… 🧵

India's 1975 Emergency - Indira Gandhi Interview on Democracy and Dictatorship (1976)
YouTube video by ITN Archive India's 1975 Emergency - Indira Gandhi Interview on Democracy and Dictatorship (1976)

Smart autocrats speak the language of protecting the people; dumb ones lie about false accomplishments.

Rewatching this chilling interview from the Indian Emergency had me thinking about the difference.

Per Dr Atul Gawande, ex USAID: “All malaria supplies protecting 53 million people, mostly children, including bed nets, diagnostics, preventive drugs, and treatments – terminated.”

There are no words that sufficiently describe this level of cruelty and sadism.

Also literally WHO are those people watching all the innies while they work?? And what are those buttons they push? Are they the ones making innies "feel" the specific emotions? When will Cold Harbor be complete and WHAT DO THOSE ROOMS MEAN!!!! Going to be the longest week ever
