and realised I literally used to own it. Thrifted it in London, gave it away before moving because I couldn’t ship everything. Wild to see it again in Aug 2025. Guess it’s time I actually read it.

24.07.2025 04:42 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0 From what I’ve pieced together:
- Rūḥānī worked in India, likely Delhi or Lucknow
- His pieces date to the mid–late 20th century
- Marketed to collectors of Persianate revival art
- Sold via reputable auctions like Everard and Caza Sikes
- Signature always in Arabic script: روحانی
Same pastel palette. Same themes. Same signature. More matches popped up on Caza Sikes Auction, Jerusalem Gallery Listing and Invaluable Lot.
This isn’t anonymous work—it’s part of a known body by an identified (if still mysterious) artist whose paintings are circulating globally.
His work echoes Mughal + Safavid traditions. Think saqis (cupbearers), lovers, musicians, and birds of longing. Painted in gouache and ink on paper.
I found a direct artist match on a MutualArt Listing. A lot of 9 paintings, all signed روحانی, attributed to the Indian miniature painting revival.
Each piece is signed in Arabic script:
روحانی — transliterated Rūḥānī
Meaning: spiritual, mystic
Turns out “Rūḥānī” was a 20th-century artist working in the Indo-Persian revivalist miniature style.
I have some guesses about the artist, the signature, and the provenance. The style is clearly Persianate: romantic figures under cherry blossoms, wine scenes, and poetic gestures. But something felt Indian too: the clothing, colours, and flourishes had post-Mughal vibes.

Rewatching this chilling interview from the Indian Emergency had me thinking about the difference.
